So the other Day I stopped by walmart (sorry MHLady, I know you are very anti Walmart) to pick up a couple of things, and while perusing the electronics area I saw they had a new device. It is a VuPoint Slide/Film Scanner. Now mind you it is not professional scanning equipment. But as long as your negative is in descent shape you can scan in your old photographs. Personally I like playing with pictures using Paint.net an awesome program for the price!!! (as it is free). However, I do think scanning in all those pictures will be a bit time consuming, but in the end I will have a soft copy of pictures broadening how many photos I have to work with, and what I can do with these old pictures.

Not just MHLady. I've been Wal-Mart free for 3 years, 4 months now! Woohoo!!!!

I have been slowly using my scanner to scan in my old pre-digital photos. I have printed a few out on photo paper and they look very nice. Is this gadget supposed to do a better job?

Not sure, Maybe later today when I get home I will regular scan a piece of filmstrip. And than compare them. Maybe I will post them and let others decide.

I don't mean about scanning negatives (I assume that's what you mean by filmstrip?). In many cases, I don't even have the negatives anymore. So I'm scanning in the photos themselves and get print quality prints from them. Well...at least the same quality of print as the original print, anyway.

So I'm curious what the advantage is of scanning negatives vs. scanning the photos themselves.

I'll be curious to hear more about this gadget.

Well I know that in my house a negative is likely to be in better condition than the actual photo due to the fact that most of the negatives are in sleeves. Plus if you happened not to make duplicates of a photo and gave it away, you still have the negative. I also understand not having negatives, but you can also use it for slides. How else would you get a slide from 30 + years ago on your computer? Unless you took it to a professional.

Oh and btw the device is sold at more than just walmart. Looks like target has or had it too. And as always there is purchasing online.

Oh, I don't have slides. I've just lost quite a few negatives.

I figured you could buy it elsewhere, and I would, but I'm just curious to hear how it works for ya. It might be worth getting for pictures I still have negatives for if the prints are better than prints from scanned photos.

does your mother have slides? I think my parents have some slides that were passed down to them. So I figure it may be a good way to backup this stuff.

What is the product model, number & manufacturer. My dad has a ton of slides from the old days. Is it easy to use?

Nope, no slides. Photos. Very few negatives. I don't think my mom has any negatives. Mr. Funky's parents don't have slides either. But my mom does have a lot of home movies that I really want to get transferred to digital before they degrade. Heck, considering they're from my childhood, they're getting really old now. shocked

Well mine says it is the 21c Film and Slide Digital Converter model wm-fc-vp. And yes I think it is fairly easy to use.

There's a lot more information on the negative than on a finished print--the print-making process involves a lot of decisions on the part of the print-maker, including things like how long the photo paper is exposed and whether filters are used to adjust color, contrast and so on. By going to the negative instead of scanning a print you're giving yourself a lot more source material to work with.

Yeah, I took photography and loved the development more than the picture-taking.

I guess what I'm wondering is if the gadget is worth it considering I don't have negatives for all our old photos anymore. I would love to see an example of what a photo looks like scanned and what a photo from the scanned negative looks like. So, Amber, if you want to share something like that, I'd appreciate it.

It appears it is for slides and negatives.

We got a canon scanner/printer for scanning in old photos.
There is a service I saw, online, where you ship them shoeboxes of photos/negatives, and you get CDs back (oh, and the originals) of very high-resolution digitals. Can't remember the name of it, but it was pretty reasonable if you have a lot of precious stuff.

I've started scanning some baby pictures. Wow, I was cute!

lmao it is probably best you did not finish your sentence there. But I would have said this is where someone replies with "what happened?" (meaing you grew up) lol I mean you might have been a cute baby.... but now your are.... wink Just kidding. Some babies are cuter than others, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Now don't get me wrong I think my kid is super cute (and I guess I might be biased on that) But I have also thought other babies were cuter than my kid too LOL (so maybe not so biased anymore?). My son could have been a cute gerber baby as he didn't really have any hair until he turned 2, and his teecth came in later than most (and a lot of people told me that they thought he could be a model).
