It's real. It's not actually a forcefield, it's an explosive charge that goes off and destroys the incoming round with metal fragments.
It's not new, either--there was a big controversy a couple years ago when the Bush Administration refused to buy a similar system that was already deployed by the Israelis, in favor of one that hadn't even entered testing yet by an American company. We'll never know how many lives the Israeli system could have saved in Iraq--the troops never got it and the American system still hasn't entered service.
