If I was in the market, that is.

Xperia x1i

My three year old Sony P1i is still working fine, so I'm not in the market, and the only difference between the x1i and the P1i is a half inch larger screen, the slide accessible keyboard, and GPS which I have no use for.

None-the-less, when one compares the features of the $390 unlocked x1i to the more expensive Apple iphone, there is really no comparison. The only drawback I have seen is the Windows Mobile OS.

Here in Mexico one buys an unlocked GSM phone and can then just slip in the SIM card from one's older phone. Service is prepaid and one may purchase time at the grocery store or at a zillion mom-and-pop stores. The unlocked phone is more expensive up front but there is no service contract and one receives no bills.

Again, I just don't get why the iphone has created such a stir.

Just present yourself as a technology blogger to the Apple public relations department. In a few hours you'll be back on the street with a bag of tsotchkes, a beatific smile on you face, and the knowledge that you have received the iTruth.

Good suggestion, but I think I'll pass. Apple doesn't produce anything I need, except, occasionally, its Quicktime software.

I do. I bought my wife a Touch for Christmas. It is a great piece of tech. It works beautifully and simply in its complexity. I've watched students w/ severe cognitive deficits navigate through it with 3 college educated adults and an parapro scrambling to keep up their movements.

It is amazing to me how adept young folks here are at texting with one hand while walking along talking with friends. Not long ago I saw a guy texting while riding through city traffic on a motorbike.

Thanks Chubbs. That is a nice phone. I generally lag a couple or three generations behind when purchasing tech stuff to save money.

So when my P1i pukes out I will probably be looking at buying a later model. I think Sony Ericsson and HTC are making the best smart phones these days.
