From NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center. The tsunami, generated by and 8.8 earthquake in Chile, is estimated to arrive at Westport about 3:00 PST today. This message is for Information Only for coastal areas of Oregon, Washington, British Columbia and Alaska from the Oregon-California border to Kodiak, Alaska.
A Tsunami Advisory means that a tsunami capable of producing strong currents or waves dangerous to persons in or very near the water is imminent or expected. Significant, widespread inundation is not expected for areas under an advisory. Currents may be hazardous to swimmers, boats, and coastal structures and may continue for several hours after the initial wave arrival.
At 10:34 PM Pacific Standard Time on February 26, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 8.8 occurred near the coast of central Chile . (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.) This earthquake has generated a tsunami which could cause damage to coastal regions in a warning or advisory. The waves are expected to first reach La Jolla, California at 0:02 PM PST on February 27. Estimated tsunami arrival times and maps along with safety rules and other information can be found on the WCATWC web site.

Friends who have a condo on the beach in Kehei started up the mountain an hour before the sirens sounded, to stay at another home there. They were predicting the possibility of a 12-15 foot wave.
We received Wallace's/Whelan's auto cell phone alert at about 9 am this morning.

Id rather have nothing come of a warning than no warning at all.
I was getting a little tired of people calling me telling me to get to high ground. I was also amazed about how many people didn't even know where Chile was or how a tsunami even worked and that it will take almost a day for it to get here if at all. But again id rather have almost a days notice than none at all.
The 1960 tsunami in HI came from an earthquake in Chile so i understand the response.

Well, that was much ado about not much. I'm pretty glad about that. A village in Chile lost a half dozen to the tsunami. In all the tragedy of the dreadful destruction in Chile, I didn't learn about the earthquake in Japan (7 on the Richter Scale) until this afternoon.

Definitely glad it fizzled! However, it provided my friends an exciting break from the drudgery of laying on the white sand beach! (jk about the drudgery part) In all the tragedy of the dreadful destruction in Chile, I didn't learn about the earthquake in Japan (7 on the Richter Scale) until this afternoon. Weren't you a Boy Scout? Be techno prepared, buddy! Worldwide earthquake notifications can now be sent to your cell phone. Everyone in this part of the country should sign up. The U.S. Geological Survey Earthquake Hazards Program Earthquake Notification Service (ENS) is a customizable system provided free to everyone. You can receive earthquake notifications for any earthquakes located by the ANSS/NEIC (Advanced National Seismic System/National Earthquake Information Center) in the U.S. and around the World. Information for earthquakes in the U.S. is generally available within 5 minutes; information for earthquakes elsewhere in the World is generally available within 30 minutes.https://sslearthquake.usgs.gov/ens/help

How do you sign up for that?

OK, just signed up for this. Is this the same as the Whelan/Wallace notification? Or something different?

Yesterday we went out to Pacific Beach for the Chocolate Festival. Ummmmm, yummmmmmm. People were packing in there since they were advised not to go on the beach for clam-digging.
Deputies and F&W vehicles were all over, at beach approaches advising people not to go onto the beach and, also, on bluffs overlooking the beach in case the worst happened and people on the beach needed assistance.
We stood on a bluff for about an hour watching the few folks clam-digging just south of Pacific Beach with about 25 other people, including a few F&W guys. We were wishing we had brought our licenses and clam shovels. Oh, well...
Agree that it's better to have warnings that turn out to be nothing than to hear nothing and have a nasty surprise.

We signed up so long ago, I don't exactly remember how or where...maybe through the hospital? college? EOC? However, I found this local emergency notification site which should be/do the same thing: http://www.co.grays-harbor.wa.us/info/DEM/EMailTWS.asp
