I'm not saying it was the right way to handle it but I also think far more is being made of the video than it deserves. If any of us were followed around and videod, we would end up with bloopers. Maybe quite a few of 'em. And aren't we all seasoned people who should know how to behave properly? But we all mess up once in awhile.
"Macaca" was mesmerizing. Charlie/Luke is really pretty meh, imho.

Well, your recollection would be slightly flawed. I think Mr. Funky will recall me nudging and coughing and hinting that he might want to stop. And, him saying, "No!"... and continuing quite vociferously.
In our little pond, it worked out very well. There was nothing on the tape they could use for the evening news and I may very well have slapped him on the back afterwards. But, today, in the age of YouTube? Dumb move, Charley Rangal. And Mr. Funky's rant could have gone viral. Hmmm? Would that have been so bad?

Well, what I recall you telling me was "if they actually show what he said, everybody in GH would vote for him" so some viral ain't bad. Although, we all know some viral is edited and that could be bad, unless it's so silly that any reasonable person would question it. Like some at that other forum.

I watched the video. Big whoop. I'm surprised they aired it. I don't think there was an editing issue, because it doesn't seem like there was anything to edit. Listening to Charlie, though, almost sounded like listening to John Erak, in style that is. I'm sure that comes from so many years of doing this (interviews, politics, etc.).
Editing does play a major role, though, in videos. While doing a little research, trying to find out more about the views of various candidates in this year's elections, I found that one Republican candidate that is running for the legislature here is posting this video around. When someone commented that it would be nice if it could be proved to not be edited, he responded that it didn't look edited to him. Really?
