Tee Hee.... Brian Aberdeen Planning commission to hit the road Thursday, July 29, 2010 The Daily World
The Aberdeen Planning Commission will hit the road next month for a bus tour to figure out what areas of the city need to be addressed for improvement in the city's comprehensive plan.
"It's to get out and look at exactly what we consider blight and what we consider revitalization," said Community Development Director Lisa Scott. "What works, what doesn't and some of the ideas we're considering for the Planning Commission."
The bus tour, which will be a public meeting of the Planning Commission, leaves 9 a.m., Aug. 14 from Aberdeen City Hall. To reserve a spot, contact Scott at (360) 537-3238.
Scott invited Aberdeen Council members to join the Planning Commission for the tour, which she expects to last about 90 minutes.
Aberdeen property owners, beware! Saturday, August 14, 2010
There's a bus rolling and if you're one of the blighted masses it just might hit you. Today, the Aberdeen Planning Commission will be taking a bus tour beginning at 9 a.m. and lasting 90 minutes.
Aberdeen's Community Development Director is the point of contact for this trip and she is quoted in The Daily World as saying, "It's to get out and look at exactly what we consider blight and what we consider revitalization."
Blight is defined by RCW 35.80A.010 and it would be interesting to see if "what we consider blight" follows the definition of law, or is it going to be just the opinion of the Aberdeen Planning Commission as they drive around judging citizens properties?
A designation as a "blighted property" will lead to an abatement action. I wonder how many good citizens will have an abatement action applied against them as a result of this "bus tour"?
You may have heard about troubles concerning the Aberdeen Building Department? It's interesting to note that the Building and Code Enforcement Manager is listed on the Community Development page of the City of Aberdeen Web site.
Watch out for that bus!

I hear tell that a guy in Hoquiam allows the city to cut his grass, lien his property for the cost of the work, patiently waits for the county to advertise the lien foreclosure sale to collect the debt, and only then pays off the lien claim just one day before the public auction. Funny things we yanks will do.
Damn the man

I was referring to the commission traveling about the city in order to determine what is blight or revitalization.

I was referring to the commission traveling about the city in order to determine what is blight or revitalization. I have no problem with it. Better than sitting in the committee room, reading reports.

I was referring to the commission traveling about the city in order to determine what is blight or revitalization. Explain to me exactly how it is a waste of money to go out and see real world examples of what you are discussing in a room trying to write a new comprehensive plan?

I can't believe adults need to hire a bus, when there are city owned cars to go out to view a bld that is in disrepair or one that has been rebuilt in order to define what they consider blight or revitalization. I'm sure some of them at least pass by examples of each om a daily basis. And before someone mentions they all couldn't fit in one car - they could use several and take notes.

Seriously? I think it's a good idea. The bus gives them the ability for open dialog while out and about. There are so many other things to worry/complain about. For this to be one of them seems silly to me.

And before someone mentions they all couldn't fit in one car - they could use several and take notes. The idea was to have a mobile meeting; you need to have everyone in one room or vehicle to do that. Doing it in a bus allows the public to attend. I though it was an interesting idea. We need to think outside the box we've put ourselves in.

Land Use explored Thursday, August 19, 2010
I am writing on behalf of the City of Aberdeen Planning Commission to clarify who we are and what we are about.
The City of Aberdeen Planning Commission is comprised of a group of seven citizen volunteers who are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the city council. Members are Brian Little, chair; Mike Schmidt, vice chair; Bill Privatsky, John Martinsen, Bev Lufkin, Krister Lile and Ben Bouch.
I am the community development director and am designated as secretary and advisor to the commission and act as a bridge between the seven members of the commission, the mayor, city council, city departments and the public.
One of the commission's primary functions is as a land use research and fact finding agency for the municipality and it is in this capacity that the commission held a well publicized public meeting on a bus tour of the city early Saturday morning, Aug. 14.
A mix of about 20 citizens, politicians and municipal employees took the tour which went up Broadway, though Herbig Heights and Aberdeen Highlands to the hospital, down to Myrtle Street and on to Port Industrial Road, back to the downtown via Heron Street to the foot of Broadway, over to the foot of F Street and then to the Rotary Log Pavilion, from the pavilion into the residential area behind Techline and Bill's Design, then over the bridge to Market Street and back to city hall. The printed agenda and a map of the route are a matter of public record and are available upon request.
Contact me at 537-3238 for further information.
It was our hope that many more citizens would have taken us up on our tour offer and join us in the ongoing conversations surrounding what our city currently looks and feels like and to help us plan for what it might look and feel like -- someday. The tour was the second step in a multi-step plan aimed at updating elements of the Comprehensive Land Use Plan with the overarching goal of not just updating the current plan but recognizing and building upon previous and current public and private sector planning efforts.
The commission's first step was the presentation of "A Short Course in Land Use Planning" held at the Rotary Log Pavilion a couple of months back. That program, which was advertised and open to the public, provided a basis for understanding what public land use planning is and is not, as well as what it can and can not do.
The commission's goal in arranging for the recent bus tour was to view real world examples of the effects of past land use planning decisions, to discuss the factors and circumstances that have shaped our built environment as we see it today and to set the stage for taking the next step which is to continue to facilitate, embrace, organize, capitalize on, record and otherwise make relevant the many conversations regarding land use and development within our community. In other words, to plan for the future with a keen eye on the past and the present.
We ask that all who are interested in the conversation and who wish to have a voice in Aberdeen's Comprehensive Land Use plan to please join us.
Lisa Scott

Perhaps the conversation should occur behind closed doors in a smoke filled room and relieve you of the burden of being kept informed?

excuse me for giving my opinion on a subject Everyone else here is subject to folks commenting on their opinion and sharing their agreement or disagreement or asking questions or adding information. You need not seek redemption for sharing your opinion. You only need to read and digest the comments that followed, add your own, and then accept, reject, or incorporate those thoughts. That's the way it's done here.

Well, on this board, not all criticism is constructive. Find it where you can.

OK. Perhaps you might elaborate on what exactly your opinion is. Correct me if I am wrong but what I understood you to say was that the tour was nothing but a waste of public money scheduled by a group of pathetic people just to look at the obvious.

The bus tour cost Aberdeen nothing.
GH Transit donated the bus, driver and fuel so I guess the citizens of the county picked-up the tab.
