Aberdeen Planning commission to hit the road
Thursday, July 29, 2010
The Daily World

The Aberdeen Planning Commission will hit the road next month for a bus tour to figure out what areas of the city need to be addressed for improvement in the city's comprehensive plan.

"It's to get out and look at exactly what we consider blight and what we consider revitalization," said Community Development Director Lisa Scott. "What works, what doesn't and some of the ideas we're considering for the Planning Commission."

The bus tour, which will be a public meeting of the Planning Commission, leaves 9 a.m., Aug. 14 from Aberdeen City Hall. To reserve a spot, contact Scott at (360) 537-3238.

Scott invited Aberdeen Council members to join the Planning Commission for the tour, which she expects to last about 90 minutes.

Aberdeen property owners, beware!

There's a bus rolling and if you're one of the blighted masses it just might hit you. Today, the Aberdeen Planning Commission will be taking a bus tour beginning at 9 a.m. and lasting 90 minutes.

Aberdeen's Community Development Director is the point of contact for this trip and she is quoted in The Daily World as saying, "It's to get out and look at exactly what we consider blight and what we consider revitalization."

Blight is defined by RCW 35.80A.010 and it would be interesting to see if "what we consider blight" follows the definition of law, or is it going to be just the opinion of the Aberdeen Planning Commission as they drive around judging citizens properties?

A designation as a "blighted property" will lead to an abatement action. I wonder how many good citizens will have an abatement action applied against them as a result of this "bus tour"?

You may have heard about troubles concerning the Aberdeen Building Department? It's interesting to note that the Building and Code Enforcement Manager is listed on the Community Development page of the City of Aberdeen Web site.

Watch out for that bus!

I hear tell that a guy in Hoquiam allows the city to cut his grass, lien his property for the cost of the work, patiently waits for the county to advertise the lien foreclosure sale to collect the debt, and only then pays off the lien claim just one day before the public auction. Funny things we yanks will do.

Damn the man

Am I understanding you correctly? You think it's sad that people have nothing better to do than serve on the planning commission?

I was referring to the commission traveling about the city in order to determine what is blight or revitalization.

I have no problem with it. Better than sitting in the committee room, reading reports.

Explain to me exactly how it is a waste of money to go out and see real world examples of what you are discussing in a room trying to write a new comprehensive plan?

Perhaps you would prefer they just sit in front of a computer using Google Earth?
