So I'm noticing my site traffic consists of only about %6 IE6 these days, but I'm stuck with a win 2k box at work. I use FireFox on it as well, but it's nice having that second cookie handler for development.

Is anyone else out there stuck on a windows 2k box, at work or home, and starting to notice the interwebs moving away from backwards compatibility?

I'm starting to run into issues with my own sites where I'm close to just dumping IE6 entirely, I think the %6 is mostly ME from work.

Are you serious! I would die for an upgrade to Win2kPro! For sure, I'm seriously getting tired of this WinME crud that I've been using forever.

In all seriousness you probably are the %6 that is visiting using IE6 so it would be safe to say that you could easily stop using it. Should you want to view in a secondary cookie handler try any or all of the other major browser ie. opera, chrome, I believe you can even find Navigator somewhere out there. There is a new browser, or relatively new, called Maxthon that I also use on occasion if testing a new theme or web app I am developing.

All developers, even MS, operate on the idea that you "Innovate or Perish". Dropping IE6 may be necessary.

However! If you are using a web CMS that mandates an IE interface for management then it may be time to upgrade your web CMS.

Maybe it's time to get a new box. For $300-500, you could get something that will last another 10 years. I mean, it's not like you guys still use turntables, do you? Wait! Do you?

heh, we'll that's the problem ,any real upgrade money (if I had a budget) would go to the on air systems and production, then sales. My own web-surfer-for-news PC is back back of the bus. and no my CMs works fine with IE, my problem is that some of my new theme tricks don't work so well with older IE - works fine with FF and Opera. My CMS is outpacing my old PC - and holy wow, Millennium Edition? - lol. yeah maybe if I had a budget I'd get 5th out of that OS first

Yep, lots of sites are getting away from supporting IE6. There are just so many things that it does wrong or doesn't do properly that it's a PITA.

Every thought of Linux? Free OS and no need for AV. Using IE6 is like hunting with a rusty musket loader, dangerous and out dated.

Oh I use linux all the time at home and occasionally at work, my question was more about my website's compatibilities with other users' OS. Although it would be cute to have a better worded anti-ie6 popup;

"We're sorry, this site is no longer compatible with IE6, please install Linux, we recommend ubuntu, but most are free, easily accessible, safer (when setup correctly), and far superior to your current OS, have a nice day."
