Making Godaddy a Crybaby

At last count I had 19 domains registered over at Godaddy. Some have corresponding Godaddy hosted websites. I am completely against SOPA and am alarmed at Godaddy's waffling on the subject and even the hint they might support it again. Moving 19 Urls and few websites would be a pain in the ass but may be necessary. Joining the 37000 and growing number leaving godaddy might be in my near future. It's easy to join a protest that affects me when the message is unified.

It's time for me to renew my domain name... and move it to a different service provider.

There is quite a movement of people leaving GoDaddy over the SOPA nonsense. I hope all the companies supporting SOPA are facing similar pressure from consumers.

I'm happy with freehostia (their paid hosting plan) and namecheap for registration.

Penny Arcade just showed the power of angry unified geeks. I'm very curious to see how this turns out for GoDaddy.

A few inquiries;

1. You can't be included on a mass pm but can reply to a post. Odd UBBthread coding?

2. Opinion: Will Anonymous target Godaddy?

3. Does Anonymous have the balls to target Paypal?

4. Do you prefer "geek" over "nerd"?

1. Not positive. Best guess- you probably can't PM someone who has blocked your user. I toggle your posts in some threads, like this one, and enjoy discussing with you. Others... well, suffice to say I don't. I'd be happy to unblock if you have something you want to discuss in PM, however.

2. Good question. GD is a power player, but Anon seems to be going after more political targets. But, they're also attention whores with a fetish for salting wounds, so they might like to take a cheap shot while the spotlight is still on. My bet would be no.

3. I don't think they have balls at all. I think they lack common sense and a big picture vantage point. They have targeted some heavy hitters and it will one day catch up with them in a bad way. But, they seem to be targeting the easily despised 1% type. PayPal is used by people from all walks. They would be harming a lot of the "little guy" they claim to have sympathy for by hitting PayPal. It would alienate a LOT of the people that are cheering them on. My bet is they won't.

4. Prefer geek. You?

1. Understandable. I can't stand half the things I say to myself. Went on a fishing expedition and tried to include you on a mass PM for assistance. No Worries. Seemingly LJ toggles too since I see him reading my posts sometimes wink and couldn't include him as well. Fishing was successful and fun. Maybe next time.

2. Can see the logic there. My bet leans negative as well. Thought you might see and angle I wasn't. Combining this with #3; I don't see them hitting people who could effectively hit back. wikileaks is a casualty to tech giants smacking hacker wieners.

3. Agree. My assessment of that situation couple with above comments.

4. Always prefer Nerd. Respect Geek. Pity Dweeb.

Occasionally I toggle. I don't always regret it.

It appears godaddy.com has flipped it script when speaking about SOPA. But that doesn't mean it won't silently waffle it's way back to supporting. A careful eye needs to be kept on legislation like this and continued pressure needs to be kept on companies supporting it and their reasons for support. We can debate final tallies and numbers but the end result was great.

Unified protest message, Organization, Respectful and Peaceful equals positive results*.

GoDaddy was helping write the legislation. I'm glad they have backed off on their support, but I don't trust they've had any real change of heart. Their intent is the same, they just want to do it quietly. The language of their flip-flop is very telling. They want a greater consensus among Internet stakeholders. It has nothing to do with Internet rights or government intrusion, they just don't want to take the hit. Some of the major players on the Internet are against it. Heck, Google and Facebook both oppose it. There is talk of the opposition closing their services for a day to give SOPA supporters a glimpse of the future without them. Imagine a day without Google and Facebook, not to mention all the other services used daily all over the world. Traffic will go from downtown Seattle in rush hour to downtown McCleary at midnight.

I completely agree with you assessment of the situation regarding Godaddy. I was commenting on the idea and fact that large entities can be made to change the course with focused and determined protest. The scarier thought are those continuing their support Sony, Microsoft, Dell this is gonna be interesting to watch how/if government gets involved. But SOPA or protect IP is NOT the way to do it.

As you mentioned it would affect sites even as small as GHT. Some moron could post a logo of sorts and next thing you know you have a company trying to shut it down. Can you image how busy our benevolent moderators would be if some asshole posted trademarked logos. Sheesh they/he would be so ever worked! And just for a free community forums site. I doubt we have such a dumb ass that would post logos of random SOPA supporting comanies. Because even that would make life hectic for them. It doesn't have to be just some lamer asshat posting links to sites where copyright and trademarked materials are free for the taking.

I would addendum your post with "the traffic in any Grays Harbor town/city at midnight."

It'll be fun watching SOPA play out.

I'm not sure how I want to react. While the more people who speak out against SOPA is great. Al gore is brow deep in the lunacy of another issue that I oppose. It's kinda like being at a TEA-Party anti-war rally and looking around and seeing the KKK there. Ya know, everyone there is there for a good cause but some of the people there are assholes. I hope his speaking out doesn't encourage those who hate Al just to hate Al to mobilize for SOPA just to be in opposition to Al.

I think his heart may be in the right place, but he comes with baggage that makes him an easy target. So, yeah, maybe the Internet doesn't want him as a spokesman. Just a silent partner. smile

I can understand his concern, though. After all Al did create the internet:
