Read that “Tabitha’s story” article in the Vidette and wondered if there is a point when charity and help become special treatment. Its great that a community is coming together to help out someone in need like this but the article makes me think a line is being crossed now. They’ve raised over 20 thousand dollars and there are still more events. Plus D&R show can give them another 20grand. I wonder about the other people undergoing treatment who don’t have this financial support, access to extra cash, or insurance. I always give to the Relay for Life events and charity groups since it helps to find a cure but I’m getting to a point where it seems helping someone is showing that everyone else isn’t as important. I wonder what everyone else thinks.

So charity and help, which by definition is special treatment, may be bad because it gives special treatment?

Capital punishment is as fundamentally wrong as a cure for crime as charity is wrong as a cure for poverty.
Henry Ford

The conditions in which it is necessary to take up a collection to pay for medical care is wrong. The system is broken.

Charity shouldn't be relied upon to mitigate problems caused by elected officials neglecting social responsibilities.

Charity & Help – The donations from the community and people outside the community to help the employees from Americas Diner when they were laid off and screwed out of their last paycheck.

Special Treatment – What if people got together to only help out one of the laid off employees by having a lot of events for just that one employee. What about the other laid off employees who need help too?

I agree that the need to do these types of events is a political/systemic issue, but won't go into that on this post.

I would not consider this special treatment at all! A group of close friends decided they wanted to try and help, it started off small as a grassroots type effort and I think even they were overwhelmed by the amount of support they have received.

I think it is fine to be giving to help someone out. I agree that others may need just as much help, but aren't getting it, is not fair.

I remember a time when a family's house burnt down, and there was a fundraiser to help the family out. The family was insured well, so they used to money for a trip down under.

The moral of the story is, check things out.

Oh, that would piss me off a bit if I gave to them.

I think it's wonderful the community is giving to this young woman. But I think it's equally sad that there are probably many others out there with just as great of a need who may not be getting it probably due to friends without the same level of energy, expertise and ability for promotions, etc.

I'd also venture that the fact that she is young and beautiful helps. There have been many studies showing that attractive people generate a more positive response from others.

As a society, it's a shame that such charity is needed in the first place.
