Many of the articles or cartoons I've posted here have come from The Progressive Daily Beacon. I've been a faithful follower of this blog for a long time. I've found them a steady source of quality information, humor, and inspiration. Today, The Progressive Daily Beacon announced they have pulled the plug. I am disappointed, but understanding. It takes a lot of time to keep up a quality site like PDB. Congrats to the Beacon for a great run.

I've never heard of the PDB, but just going over there, I snagged this quote, which I cannot allow to vanish without saving: There is nothing more damaging and horrifying than religion in all its forms. Religion is nothing, but an excuse for human beings to hate and slaughter and to be cruel to one another without having to feel bad for the doing. The hate and slaughter are all God's will, right? And, if it is God's will, it is all good! Truly, there is nothing more disgusting than religion. Spirituality, however, is the path to humanity's salvation. This is profound. And so very, very true.

Religion without spirituality is bankrupt. I agree with that. But, as a member of a reconciliation church, I know that there are some organized religions that do not participate in or condone anger, hate, condemnation, cruelty or violence.
That is a good blog, Stash. Wish I had known about it sooner.

That is a good blog, Stash. Wish I had known about it sooner. Sorry. Everytime I stole from it, I cited it.

That is a good blog, Stash. Wish I had known about it sooner. No, I don't agree. There may be localized outcroppings of a religion that are good, but the religion as a whole is practicing the opposite of what their deity taught. It's not just Western religions. There are, and have been, wars between factions of such "non-violent" religions as Buddhism, Hindu, and Islam. Besides the wars between those of different religions. If more and more local groups refuse to participate in the negatives, it is possible that things could turn around. That would be great. It will take time, though, time and really dedicated people.

Most wars, raids, and other atrocities were/are caused by other types of organized groups (countries, city/states, tribes, regions, etc.) than by religious fundamentalism. I'm not saying that religion has not been used as motivation but it is rarely the true cause. More often it is the excuse or justification.

other types of organized groups (countries, city/states, tribes, regions, etc.) than by religious fundamentalism Often "religious fundamentalism" is in control of those "other types of organized groups".

Yeah, sometimes. But not all the time and probably not even most of the time, if you look at conflicts through the centuries.
I just think the root problem is fundamentalism. Fundamentalism, strict adherence to certain beliefs, comes in many forms, and they're not always religious-based.
