We (10 family members) went to the Budd Bay Cafe in Oly at noon for a birthday brunch. We went there during the last hour of the buffet, when the food had been sitting there since 9 a.m. The French toast tasted like meat (ham?), the bacon was inedible, the ham & roast beef tasted bland, and there were several flies buzzing around, which, I am sure, landed on the food sitting out (Chef Gordon Ramsay, WHERE WERE YOU??)

The buffet was 99% seafood (which we don't touch in a buffet, see the movie 'Go'), which hubby and I can take in small quantities on a good day. Despite having an issue with seafood, the other food was practicaly inedible. The waiter kept making fun of me because I kept requesting more water (maybe he knew the food sucked). Supposedly this restaurant won awards for it's buffet, that is too scary. I tried posting this on Trip Advisor, but their website is screwed up right now.

I really don't want to stand in line and have to eat in a cafeteria/food court atmosphere, but JEEZ! If I have to wait on myself, at least the food shouldn't suck!!

Perhaps there are people that do like buffets, but none that I know...certainly not me.

My wife and I eat at the Budd Bay (on Percival Landing) every once in a while, and always with good results. I didn't even know they have a buffet as I've never seen it.

I'll eat at a restaurant that specializes in buffets, like JJ North's in Olympia or at the casinos--but a regular restaurant that has a "brunch" buffet is just using it to sell leftovers.

Barf-fet.

I can't decide if they rank above or below a 'potluck' made up from group of people you don't know very well.

I avoid both like the plague. If I can't find out what, exactly, is in the food I'm eating, I don't eat it.

When we went on our cruise, we decided that we would eat in the dining room, and not use the buffet much. I think it made our trip so much better, and helped to ensure that we didn't have any digestive upsets.

The occasional foray through the buffet for a plate of fruit is about what we did...

I'm just not a fan of steam tabled food, or food that's been sitting out. I also don't like to think about the "cleanliness" of the serving utensils.

I have what I like to think of as refined tastes, but there is a situational aspect to everything. As I said above, a restaurant that does only or primarily buffet business is going to be a safer bet, not to mention one that's constantly busy--the food only sits if no one is there to eat it, after all grin

I'm also a big fan of street market and street fair food, and so I've long been over squeamishness at utensils and such--hell, for that matter, I love bologna! I eat the occasional can of Spam! For me it's all about context.

I'm reminded of a cartoon in New Yorker long ago: Sitting around the boardroom table of the Acme Hotdog Company, the Chairman scolds one sheepish looking boardmember with:

"Jones, it's not a question of whether the people have a right to know what's in their hotdogs. It's a question of whether they want to know what's in their hotdogs!"

In high school I read the book "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair. I couldn't eat hot dogs or sausages for quite awhile after reading the accounts of what went into the sauage maker (rats, cochroaches, people's arms, etc.). Of course, that story took place in the early 1900's.

Well, kids, the plot has thickened on my rant.

I got an e-mail a few minutes ago from the owner/operator of the Budd Bay Cafe. Patrick informed me that he has never heard such a rude comment on the brunch, and that I need not be so nasty!!

WHAT THE. . . so of course I had to respond to THAT. I informed him that a simple apology would have gone a long way, but given his inmature response to my concerns, I could see that would never happen. As a business owner, he needs to apprecitate constructive criticisms.

Then I shot an e-mail off to the Thurston Co. health department!!

Ya don't f*** with the Jewels and expect to get away with it!!

(At the very least he could get rid of the flies!!)

grin
