    • Dr. Lori Sirs is implementing poi spinning in her summer class, “Harnessing the Healing Power of Community.” Poi spinning is a practice that began with M?ori of New Zealand, and has been adapted in recent years by those who practice flow arts. This practice is fun way to engage the body in a playful, mindful activity that engages the senses and encourages interaction with others who are spinning poi. The participants use weighted socks or similar items around ones body in rhythmic patterns. This is a M?ori cultural practice. How can Poi Spinning be therapeutic: spinning poi is inherently mindful, encouraging here and now orientation. Grays Harbor County has witnessed a burgeoning organic and natural foods movement in recent years, as the consumer demand for organic products has increased.

The county is the proud home of an organic brewery (Steam Donkey Brewing Company), farm to table restaurant (Rediviva Restaurant) and a number of businesses selling organic and natural food products. Let’s take a closer look at some of the Grays Harbor businesses leading the organic foods movement.


The Marketplace Inc.

For over thirty years the The Marketplace Inc. in Aberdeen has been supplying Grays Harbor with an expansive selection of organic and natural products. Walking down the abundantly-stocked aisles, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the amount and variety of products they offer. From a wide selection of vitamins, bulk bin items, canned and dried foods, frozen, dairy products, and nearly everything in between, you can find it at the Marketplace if you’re searching for organic foods. In addition to these staples, you’ll also find organic essential oils as well as supplies to make your own tinctures. The Marketplace also carries organic, pastured eggs from Stiebrs Farms in Yelm. Whether you’re a veteran organic shopper with a specific shopping list or a newcomer interested in learning more about organic and natural products, the Marketplace has you covered.

Organics 101 Market

Since opening in 2014, Organics 101 Market in Montesano has provided a diverse array of organic and natural food products. Located on Main Street in downtown Montesano, the market offers a wide range of products for the health-conscious shopper. In addition to seasonally-available organic produce, snacks, and dried food items, they also have a deli, smoothie bar and juice bar. You’ll also find a large assortment of cafe items such as sandwiches, Paninis, soups and salads along with organic and natural household and beauty products. You can also find Townshend’s Brew Dr. organic kombucha here. Organics 101 Market also sells raw milk from Cozy Vale Creamery – a pasture-based dairy in Tenino. Come visit this vibrant business with a friendly and informative staff.

Grays Harbor Famers Market

Since its inception in 1974 the Grays Harbor Farmers Market has been a reliable supplier of locally-produced crafts and food products. The market is home to a number of arts and crafts vendors, Deidras’ Deli, Nancy’s Bakery, and you can also find a steady supply of organic fruits and vegetables when seasonally available.

Elma Farm Stand and Public Market

The Elma Farm Stand and Public Market is an East Grays Harbor County gem. Since opening in 2014, they have provided Grays Harbor residents with a plethora of organic and natural food products. In addition to a large selection of seasonally-available organic fruits and vegetables you’ll also find a large cheese selection, local Pacific Northwest wine and beer, and an abundant selection of organic snacks. The Farm Stand also carries milk, heavy cream, half and half, chocolate and strawberry milk from Twin Brook Creamery – a pasture-based dairy in Lynden. There’s even a kombucha bar with various taps of the delicious fermented drink. The Elma Farm Stand and Public Market is worth a visit whether you’re traveling through Grays Harbor or live nearby.

Jay’s Farm Stand

Jay’s Farm Stand in Aberdeen offers a year-round supply of fresh fruits and vegetables. Shoppers can find a mix of organic and non-organic products, and you will be pleasantly surprised by the selection of produce.

Safeway

At the Safeway in Aberdeen the savvy shopper can find a number of organic staples. The store carries a robust assortment of organic fruits, vegetables, and snacks along with Organic Valley dairy products. Shoppers can also find organic deli products, spices, baking supplies, and a large collection of organic juice items. In addition to organic foods, Safeway also carries natural and chemical-free cleaning, body, and bath items.

Although discount grocery stores are not typically known for carrying organic products, The Grocery Outlet in Aberdeen offers a surprising assortment of organic snacks, drinks, and even vegetables. In addition to organic foods you’ll also find natural cleaning and bath products. If you’re on the hunt for sale-priced organic items be sure to make a stop at the Grocery Outlet.
