Westport Winery earned five Double Gold medals and six Gold medals at the Seventh Annual Bellingham Northwest Wine Competition held July 1-9, 2022.

Bog Berry Blush, a cranberry Gewurztraminer blend received 95-points and a Double Gold medal making it Westport’s highest scoring wine at this competition. A portion of the proceeds from this wine benefits the Cranberry Museum at the WSU Research Station in Long Beach, Washington. The sculpture commemorating this wine was created by Hoquiam artist Carrie Larsen. The label is an original watercolor of a Furford cranberry harvester by Tokeland artist Wally Mann. The Gewurztraminer grapes in this blend were harvested at famed Red Willow Vineyard in the Yakima Valley AVA.

Nirvana, a Grenache, Syrah, Mouvedre blend crafted by Westport’s director of winemaking, Mark Bosso was made from grapes picked at Joe Hattrup’s Sugarloaf and Elephant Mountain Vineyards in the Rattlesnake Hills AVA. This wine earned a Double Gold medal and 94-points from the judges. This wine benefits Grays Harbor PAWS in Aberdeen, the home of the band Nirvana. A giant replica sculpture of the guitar Kurt Cobain designed for Fender was created by internationally renowned wood artist Jeffro Uitto from Tokeland. The baby girl swimming underwater on the label of this wine features winery co-owner Carrie Roberts when she was just six months old.

Surfer, featuring Syrah grapes from Elephant Mountain Vineyard, also received a score of 94-points and a Double Gold medal. This label features Carrie’s father, and winery co-owner Blain Roberts, from when he was a nationally rated surfer in the 1970s. A portion of the proceeds from this wine benefits Beyond Survival in Aberdeen. A glass wave sculpture created by Johnny and Darlene Camp of Opal Art Glass in Cosmopolis, is in the winery’s 15-acre display garden.

Captain Gray Chardonnay, harvested at Sugarloaf Vineyard and aged in French oak barrels, earned 93-points and a Double Gold medal. Westport watercolorist Barbara Sampson painted the label featuring the winery. Kimmi Kerns of Shelton designed and built the ceramic sculpture that commemorates this wine. Some proceeds from this wine are dedicated to the Grays Harbor Symphony.

Red Sky at Night, a decadent raspberry chocolate wine, garnered a Double Gold medal and 93-points. Ocosta photographer Rachel Rose created the label for this wine that benefits Harbor Rescue, a dog rescue organization. The sculpture for this wine, designed by Stacy Lindell-Horton, is in the Chocolate Garden.

Rapture of the Deep, a sparkling cranberry wine, won a Gold medal with a 92-point score. This is the winery’s most awarded production and has been named one of the top fifty wines in the Northwest for three years. The label is a photograph of a Hawaiian octopus by Blain Roberts who previously founded Lahaina Divers on Maui. Opal Art Glass created the sculpture for this label that benefits Harbor Home Health & Hospice.

Jetty Cat, a Tempranillo from Sugarloaf Vineyard, received a Gold medal and 91-points. This wine features a label by Aberdeen artist Dr. Brian McGregor. The garden sculpture is a gathering of topiary jetty cats near the iconic Topiary Parade. This wine benefits the Harbor Association of Volunteers for Animals (HAVA).

Swimmer, crafted from Petite Sirah grapes harvested at Hattrup Vineyards, won a Gold medal with 91-points. The sculpture by Elma artist Frank Ratte is in the Beauty From Ashes Garden. The label was created by Blain’s wife, winery co-owner, Kim Roberts. Some proceeds from this wine benefit Battlefield to Ballroom an organization dedicated to helping veterans overcome post-traumatic stress through dance.

Pineapple Express, a tropical blend of pineapple and Riesling, received a Gold medal and 91-points. The label by Darryl Easter of Camarillo, California, is of a bird-of-paradise. Honolulu artist Peggy Kala Hubacker, a descendant of the famed 11th century Hawaiian navigator Kaulu-a-kalana, created the sculpture of La’amao’mao, the Hawaiian wind goddess. This wine benefits the Washington State Patrol Retired Police Dog Fund.

Willapa White, a Pinot Gris and Riesling blend crafted with grapes from Hattrup Vineyards, captured 90-points and a Gold medal. This wine features another original painting by Wally Mann. It is recommended on the tasting notes that this wine be enjoyed while listening to Wanted: Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi. This wine benefits WEfish an organization dedicated to celebrating community, family, and the commercial fishing industry in Westport.

True Blue earned 90-points and a Gold medal. This Malbec was grown at Sugarloaf Vineyard. The label is another original watercolor by Darryl Easter. The sculpture by Clallam Bay artist Lora Malakoff is in the Something Blue Garden. This wine benefits North Beach PAWS in Ocean Shores.

Westport Winery Garden Resort, the Sea Glass Grill, Ocean’s Daughter Distillery, and the International Mermaid Museum are located halfway between Aberdeen and Westport in coastal Washington State.
