A survey done by Intuit Credit Karma found that 50% of parents will have to decide between paying bills and buying groceries, or buying school supplies. Chavéz Beauty School is doing its part to help out parents by providing free haircuts to all kids kindergarten through 12th grade (ages 5-17) at their back-to-school event happening August 16, 2024, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Having a new haircut can give kids confidence as they step back into the classroom, and a free cut alleviates stress on parents’ budget.

“It’s really hard in our small town to get in for a haircut and when families are getting ready to send their kids back to school, they want them to have a fresh haircut for those first-day photos,” shares Maria Chavez. “This is our way to give back to our community as well as help out those families in need, but also take some of the pressure of making an appointment for haircuts.”

The Chavéz Beauty School offers cosmetology, barbering, esthetics, manicure and instructor programs of varying lengths for students who want a career in the beauty industry. “I want to give back to this community what it gave to me so many years ago,” shares Maria on the Beauty School’s website. “Being a small town, we don’t have many options but beauty school has always been a great addition to our little town that has a great reward. We lost our beauty school just before the pandemic and since then, it has been missed very much. I was given the opportunity to bring the school back and took the chance I got so that Chavez Beauty School can create great professionals to add to the beauty world and our community.”

Free Haircuts for Kids in Grays Harbor

No appointment is necessary for the Chavéz Beauty School back-to-school haircut event. Just show up between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Haircuts are performed by the Beauty School students, under the supervision of a licensed instructor/professional. “Right now, we have 12 students signed up to volunteer, all students from our beauty school and a few local professionals from our area,” shares Maria. “Our students get excited for these events because they get to feel the high-paced work environment salons go through and it also teaches them about participating in our community to those less fortunate or just can’t seem to get their kids in for a haircut right before school starts.”

Last year was their first year offering free kid haircuts. They had 52 kids from the community come out that day. Haircut styles are done according to the child’s and/or parent’s request. Due to time restraints, they are doing just haircuts, no extra services.
