Dr. Lori Sirs is implementing poi spinning in her summer class, “Harnessing the Healing Power of Community.” Poi spinning is a practice that began with M?ori of New Zealand, and has been adapted in recent years by those who practice flow arts. This practice is fun way to engage the body in a playful, mindful activity that engages the senses and encourages interaction with others who are spinning poi. The participants use weighted socks or similar items around ones body in rhythmic patterns. This is a M?ori cultural practice. How can Poi Spinning be therapeutic: spinning poi is inherently mindful, encouraging here and now orientation.
