Free Parent Practicum @ Grays Harbor Foursquare Church
Jul 24 – Jul 26 all-day
Free Parent Practicum @ Grays Harbor Foursquare Church | Aberdeen | Washington | United States

Practicum (‘prak-ti-k’m). The word practicum indicates that education should be practical. It points to the acquisition and mastery of knowledge in a manner that is useful and effective. It derives from the Latin practicus, a noun which means “one who practices or takes action.”

Are you new to homeschooling and feeling overwhelmed? We want to help you succeed in your home education mission. Join us this summer as experienced homeschoolers present three-day training sessions for parents. Rather than taking a well-deserved break from school and all things educational, these experienced homeschoolers begin to travel across their regions and around the country to present three-day training sessions to reinforce the classical, Christian model.

Are you new to classical education? Our morning sessions will unpack the classical, Christian model and allow you to practice skills for learning alongside your children at home. Afternoon sessions will go in depth with particular subjects. In both sessions, parents will have opportunities to discuss new ideas and to practice their new-found skills.

Are you discouraged with your home school? Or, do you feel you could encourage others? In addition to providing a place to practice the teaching tools, our FREE one-day and three-day Parent Practicums equip our families across the nation each year with the encouragement and camaraderie they need to teach their children well. Each practicum is a place to connect, to question, to celebrate both failure and success, and to gain confidence in our ability to use the classical model to learn and to teach our children any subject.

In 2013, Classical Conversations hosted hundreds of FREE training events for over 15,000 adults who wanted to learn more about teaching grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric skills to their students.

Academic & nursery day camps are also offered for children between the ages of 0-12 years for a low cost of $35 per child, which covers all 3 days. **Space is limited**

Please contact Nichol Strode or Julie Bradbury for registration details.

Book Talk: Peter Donahue’s THREE SIDES WATER @ Harbor House Writers
Jun 23 @ 12:00 pm
Book Talk: Peter Donahue's THREE SIDES WATER @ Harbor House Writers | Aberdeen | Washington | United States

Join us in celebrating award-winning author Peter Donahue’s new book Three Sides Water at Harbor House Writers with novelist Scott Elliott in Aberdeen on Saturday, June 23, 2018. Washington author Peter Donahue will read from his new book Three Sides Water at Harbor House Writers with novelist Scott Elliott in Aberdeen on June 23, 2018 at 12:00 PM. In his latest work of literary fiction, Donahue distills the raw and vivid world of the Olympic Peninsula into a stunning work that challenges what it means to live life with purpose and integrity.

THE BOOK
Across the dramatic landscape of the Pacific Northwest’s Olympic Peninsula, Donahue’s characters take extraordinary actions to transcend the limitations imposed upon them. Marguerite struggles with the emotional aftermath of sexual assault amidst the mysticism and untamed wilderness of the Pacific coast in the 1920s. Avery navigates life as a “juvenile delinquent” while the social and political convulsions of the 1960s transform the world around him. Chris escapes the present-day mill town where he grew up, only to find he must reconcile his true self with the troubling persona he’s taken on.

THE AUTHOR
Peter Donahue is the author of the novels Clara and Merritt and Madison House, winner of the 2005 Langum Prize for American Historical Fiction, and the short story collection The Cornelius Arms. He is co-editor of the 2016 edition of the memoir Seven Years on the Pacific Slope and the anthologies Reading Seattle and Reading Portland. His Retrospective Review column on Northwest literature has appeared in Columbia: The Magazine of Northwest History since 2005. He teaches at Wenatchee Valley College at Omak and lives in Winthrop, Washington.

In addition to reading passages from each of the short novels in Three Sides Water, Peter will be spending some time discussing Olympic Peninsula literature and fielding questions from the audience.

Driftwood Theater presents “Love Letters” by A.R. Gurney @ Driftwood Theater
Jul 6 @ 7:30 pm – Jul 28 @ 7:30 pm
Driftwood Theater presents "Love Letters" by A.R. Gurney @ Driftwood Theater | Aberdeen | Washington | United States

LOVE LETTERS

Written by A. R. Gurney

Directed by Ben Hohman

Reader’s Theatre for all ages.

Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, are childhood friends whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank you notes and summer camp postcards. Romantically attached, they continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years, where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school, while Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools.” While Andy if off at war, Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries, becomes a successful attorney, gets involved in politics and eventually is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, her marriage in tatters, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos, drinks more than she should and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair, but it is too late for both of them. However, Andy’s last letter, written to her mother after Melissa’s untimely death, makes it eloquently clear how much they really meant and gave to each other over the years; physically apart, perhaps, but spiritually as close as only true lovers can be.

Performance dates: Every Friday and Saturday evening with curtain time at 7:30. Each weekend features a different cast.

Tickets are $15.00 and are available online at:
