This calendar is the place to find fun events happening throughout Grays Harbor County including Aberdeen, Hoquiam, Westport, Ocean Shores, Elma, Montesano and beyond.
The meeting topic this month will be small-scale forestry. Julie Sackett from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will speak to a new opportunity: creating a landscape scale forest stewardship master plan for small forest landowners in the Chehalis Basin. This presentation will interest anyone involved in small-scale forestry, as well as anyone with an interest in water quality and fish and wildlife habitat.
Show off that sweater at the “Ugly Sweater” dance at the Montesano City Hall. Your ticket includes a souvenir cup and 2 drinks during the event. This event is for 21 and over. Pre-sale tickets available at Bulldog Lanes, KD&S Environmental, Kix95.3/Grays Harbor Radio and Umpqua Bank.
Our theme this year is “Super Heroes”, and we are inviting our Survivors to our annual free Survivor Social. All Survivors and their family/friends are encouraged to come join us as we celebrate our Survivor Super Heroes!
At the Social we will serve them breakfast. There will be live entertainment, guest speakers, an opportunity for Survivors to share their stories, and lots of good fellowship and love.
Survivors will receive their 2017 Survivor t-shirt, and will be able to register for this year’s Relay For Life at the Survivor Social. Pre-registration allows them to go straight to the table at Relay on June 2nd to receive their 2017 Survivor medal, without having to stand in line.
At this meeting we’ll be learning about all things fishy and froggy in the Chehalis Basin. We’ll hear an update from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife on the Aquatic Species Restoration Plan being developed for the Chehalis Basin, and opportunities for citizen engagement. We’ll also hear from WDFW’s “Citizen Science” program coordinator about iNaturalist technology. iNaturalist is a tool citizens can use to document wildlife sightings and track changes over time – in effect, become “citizen scientists.” The tool is currently being tested out for amphibian monitoring in King County. Would you like to see it in use in the Chehalis?
Anyone with an interest in the Chehalis Basin is welcome to come to this event.
To reach long term goals, we recognize the need to have a solid strategic plan. Coastal Interpretive Center would like to add a member to the Board of Directors whose primary purpose would be to lead that effort. Are you great at strategic planning? We want you, we want you now! Come to the next board meeting.
We have the perfect place for the stuff you want to get rid of – a huge joint garage sale between Coastal Interpretive Center and North Beach VFW Post 8956.
Donations are being taken now. Drop off (no books or clothing, please) at the VFW, 953 Trent Court SE, between 9 and 11 a.m. Monday-Friday. Call 360-591-7595 for pick-up or other arrangements.
The American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest and most impactful fundraising event to end cancer. It unites communities across the globe to celebrate people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and take action to finish the fight once and for all. With the support of thousands of volunteers like you, the American Cancer Society is helping save more than 500 lives a day. Please join us and take action against a disease that has taken too much!
We’ve all seen would-be beautiful spaces choked by a field of invasive plants, whether they be Scotch Broom, blackberry thickets, tansy, thistles, reed canary grass, knotweed…. you get the picture. But what is our local government doing about it, and how can we help? Join Nancy Ness, coordinator for the Grays Harbor County Noxious Weed Board on an exploratory workshop on invasive control methods in use by our local governments. Prepare for the weather with rain gear, boots, or sunscreen as needed.
BHP, a leading global resources company, will be holding a public open house to inform the community and interested parties about a potential potash export facility at the Port of Grays Harbor’s Terminal 3 in west Hoquiam.
Following the presentation, attendees will have the opportunity for questions and discussions at various stations with BHP representatives. For more information, go here.
