For 2015, Westport Winery is hosting “Dancing Without Scars” one night a month as a fundraiser for Beyond Survival, a domestic violence support group in Aberdeen. Rather than charge guests a cover charge, the winery is offering free live music the third Friday of every month and encouraging dancers to leave a donation for this organization.
Tiffany Maki and Evan Mehlhoff are well-known Harbor musicians who will be returning to the winery for an encore performance.

All Kids who are ages 7 to 16 years old (by June 15) are invited to audition for 7th Street Kids’ production of “The Little Mermaid.” No prior experience is required. Kids who audition must be accompanied by a parent or guardian who must fill out and sign forms before auditions. Kids will be taught a short song and dance to perform for the directors at auditions. Approximately 50 Kids will be cast for the musical.
It’s not a bit of brilliant, new, 21st Century insight that movies are in the business of selling dreams made to seem real. The perspective is as old as cinema itself, and sometimes, the more outlandish the dream and the more outrageous the film version of reality; the better the results.
But once in a while a film comes along that turns the idea upside down or inside out. The movie itself makes an impossible dream become an incredible reality. By any measure, “Rocky” is a champion in that field. It is the first of 17 movies for 2017, showing at 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday, January 20 and 21, at downtown Hoquiam’s historic 7th Street Theatre.
In 1975, when Sylvester Stallone was a struggling actor and newlywed with $106 to his name, he became convinced that his only chance at success was to write a screenplay that would feature him in the lead role. After watching a closed-circuit telecast of unheralded club fighter Chuck Wepner defying the odds and all predictions by battling boxing legend Muhammad Ali into the 15th round, Stallone was inspired. He wrote the first draft of “Rocky” in three and a half days and held out for a deal that would let him play the uneducated but kind-hearted working class Italian-American boxer, Rocky Balboa.
The 1976 film was a monster hit, won three Academy Awards including Best Picture, and put Stallone’s career on the fast track to superstardom. Although winning neither, his dual Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Screenplay put Stallone in a very rare club. Only two others had received Academy Award nominations for acting and writing in the same film: Charles Chaplin and Orson Welles. Forty years and six more “Rocky” movies later, Stallone joined an elite group of only six actors who have received two Oscar nominations for playing the same character in different films, his for “Rocky” and a Best Supporting Actor look for 2015’s “Creed.” Doors open at 7:00 pm for the 7:30 pm showings.

“Four Horsemen” reveals the fundamental flaws in the economic system and is sponsored by Grays Harbor Institute.
Each film will be screened backstage at the Bishop Center; seating will be arranged pub-style and movies will be viewed on an enormous screen. The tickets are $10 per film, which includes popcorn and a slice of pizza; beverages will be available for purchase. A discussion among the film-watchers will follow each movie.

In 2008, one of the great modern explorers of the world’s oceans, Dr. Robert Ballard, formed the Ocean Exploration Trust with a goal of making oceanic explorations accessible to the public over the internet. The flagship of this Trust is the E/V Nautilus, and it carries two Remotely Operated Vehicles. A grant allowed for four days of exploration by these vehicles in the Quinault Canyon off the shores of Washington State, where they mapped ocean floor terrain, sampled for ocean acidification, and looked at methane seeps and deep water organisms. Joe Schumacker and Olympic National Marine Sanctuary coordinated with the ship during this time, and in this presentation Joe will share information, photos, and video footage.

Downtown Future Housing Site Tour and Vigil to advance vision for 2,000 affordable housing units in Aberdeen Revitalization Plan
Aberdeen, WA – Residents of Aberdeen who have experienced homelessness first-hand and housing-insecure families advocate that affordable housing must be a central emphasis in Aberdeen’s Revitalization Plan. Saturday, under the banner “Harbor Rising,” we will gather to welcome the Most Reverend Michael Curry, presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, to the streets of Aberdeen. Having sermonized at the Royal Wedding, Curry is now an international household name. Presiding Bishop Curry’s presence honors the work of our local community, which is rising to the challenge as we face down a housing crisis and advance lasting solutions.
Local residents will lead a downtown tour highlighting both our plight and our potential for future affordable housing and treatment centers, demonstrating our vision to the Presiding Bishop and members of the New Poor People’s Campaign visiting from across Washington State. We will end the day with a vigil at Aberdeen City Hall to honor the many lives lost due to homelessness in our community. The tour will meet at 3:00pm Saturday, June 16th in the parking lot next to Jay’s Fruit Stand (corner of South G St and E Heron St, Aberdeen, WA 98520) and will end at City Hall (200 E Market St) for a vigil.
Making housing a central priority in Aberdeen’s Revitalization Plan would address issues at the heart of citywide concern for Aberdeen’s economic future.
In recent weeks, the City has responded to homelessness with ordinances that would punish homeless people for the housing crisis. There have been community efforts to evict the largest homeless camp in the city. Like the City and the business community, we want a better future for our city and we want businesses and workers to do well.
We mourn the devastating loss of the Aberdeen Armory, which housed vital services including Meals on Wheels, the Museum of History, and Coastal Community Action Program, a provider of housing assistance. Despite the backlog the fire’s destruction will place on housing resources, we know that as a resilient community, we will rise.
Those who know homelessness firsthand have a vision to restore our county and its people by rebuilding our housing stock. One in sixteen people—approximately 1,000 people—are homeless in Aberdeen (DSHS 2017). For every 100 extremely low-income families in Grays Harbor, there are just 17 housing affordable units available. For the 1,775 extremely low-income households in the county, there are only 615 affordable units available, and for the 1,715 very low-income households, only 605 affordable units are available (American Community Survey Data 2016).
Meanwhile in Aberdeen, 11.7% of housing, 862 units, stand vacant (US Census 2010), most of these currently unfit for human habitation. We propose that 2,000 units be built or restored in Aberdeen to fill the gap in affordable housing availability. Harbor Rising imagines responsible agencies partnering with local organizations to provide housing including pathways to home-ownership and employment in housing construction and restoration. The Future Housing Site tour, led by people who have experienced homeless and housing insecurity first-hand.
The tour will end at City Hall for a vigil for those who have died on the street, prayer, and words from Presiding Bishop Curry.
Harbor Rising is made up of people with experiences of homelessness and housing insecurity, local residents, and organizations including Chaplains on the Harbor, Democracy Rising, Blind Justice and more.

The FOSLS LAKE SYLVIA STATE PARK FALL FESTIVAL continues the tradition for our 12th year!
Come join us on SUNDAY, September 10th, 2023 from 8:30 – 4:00 for a day filled with fun and family activities.
If you enjoy running we have trail Races that begin at 8:30 am. From 10 – 4, you can find one of a kind art and hand crafted treasures at the Artisans Market and eat delicious food while enjoying great live music by talented local acts all on the peaceful shores of beautiful Lake Sylvia. There will also be a kayak paddling adventure, a Watershed Festival by the GH Stream Team, Galaxy Harbor Dancers and educational exhibits in the Legacy Pavilion. You can decorate a pumpkin or take a group photo in our photo booth and we will have kids activities as well.
Park for free at Simpson School (519 Simpson Ave W, Montesano WA), and take a free shuttle to the Festival. Parking inside the park is limited and requires a Discover Pass.
