Our weather is finally turning and I bet most of you spent the end of April looking at your garden and home, cleaning up after winter and making that all important “honey do” list. Get inspired to get things done by attending the WSU Master Gardeners of Grays Harbor and Pacific counties 2023 Home & Garden Show on Saturday, May 20 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 21 from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Ciscoe Morris will be the featured presenter on Sunday at 1 p.m., which you will not want to miss. With admission and parking free, there is no reason not to head to the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds to get your spring projects started right!
Home and Garden Project Ideas Made Simple
It can be hard to know how to start a project. What supplies do I need? Do I need permits? Do I need a professional or is this something that is safe to DIY? Will the plants I want grow in my soil? Instead of wasting money guessing, be sure before you start by speaking to professionals at the Home & Garden Show in Grays Harbor.
For the home, Teresa Small of the WSU Master Gardeners shares just some of the amazing vendors waiting for you at the Home & Garden Show: “There are local vendors and contractors that cover just about every home service – pest control, house painting, insulation, septic systems, landscaping, full-service contracting including bath and kitchen remodels, cabinets, tree service, heating and cooling, roofs, pavers, solar, gutters, windows, high-quality cookware and much more including the return of Bob’s Freakin’Nuts.”
She adds that you don’t want to miss checking out the tiny homes built locally in McCleary, especially if you are thinking about downsizing or adding an ADU to your property!
For the garden, the list is equally impressive. “On the garden side are numerous plant nurseries including Sabino’s trees from Oregon; wooden, metal and concrete creations; fun garden treasures; scented soaps and lotions; greenhouses and storage sheds; supplies for raising chickens and rabbits; even delicious jams, BBQ sauces and kombucha; and so much more,” Smalls shares. “Also, our Master Gardener Store will be once again selling our signature blooming planters.”
Gardening and Home Questions Answered by the Professionals
Have questions? There will be plenty of people that can answer your questions on a full range of projects. And presentations will give you information to plan your current and future projects, including pruning, growing vegetables in our climate, best fruit trees, gardening for birds and pollinators and what you need to know about noxious weeds.
At 3 p.m. on Saturday the featured speaker is Pam Watson, a poultry expert that will give you the run-down on adding chickens to your property and how to keep them thriving. Ciscoe Morris – renowned TV and radio personality – will speak on Sunday at 1 p.m. on all things garden. He encourages audiences’ participation in his show, “Stump the Chump,” and all types of questions are encouraged!
“Master Gardeners will be on hand the entire show to answer all gardening questions,” Smalls shares. “You will be able to discuss and buy soil amendments like coir and bio-char from master gardeners in the Master Gardener Store.”
Supporting the WSU Master Gardener Program
Celebrating its 50th anniversary, the WSU Master Gardener Program is a nonprofit organization that began at Washington State University and has spread throughout the US and even to other countries. “The Home & Garden Show is our biggest fundraiser that supports our program including demo gardens in both Grays Harbor and Pacific counties,” shares Smalls.
The Grays Harbor and Pacific counties group – established almost 30 years ago – has over 100 volunteers in the two counties. Smalls shares that the unique soil spanning sandy beach to farmland makes our area a unique place to garden.
The group hosts two big annual community events, the Home & Garden Show and the Garden Tour & Plant Sale in July. Volunteers also participate at the Grays Harbor County Fair with a large demo garden and Master Gardeners on hand to answer questions. At the Pacific County Fair Master Gardeners are also on hand to answer questions and have an informational display.
This free event is family-friendly, with activities for the kids too, so mark your calendars and head to the Grays Harbor County Fairgrounds May 20-21, 2023 for the Home & Garden Show. Please do not bring any pets. Services Animals are allowed.
