Olympia Orthopaedic Associates has been healing patients in southwest Washington for more than 40 years. Founded in 1972 by Drs. John Coker, Jerome H. Zechmann, Alan Roser, and Kenneth Partlow III, the group has grown over the years and now sees more than 100,000 patients and performs more than 10,000 surgeries annually. Those patients come from far and wide for the expertise found at Olympia Orthopaedic’s three Thurston County facilities: The Eastside Clinic on Lilly Road, the Westside Clinic and Surgery Center located across from Capital Medical Center, and The Yelm Clinic.
Planned for years and opened in 2012, the Westside Clinic includes 35,000-square-feet of clinical space and 22,000-square-feet of surgical facilities. The 63,000-square-foot building is one of the largest and most comprehensive orthopaedic centers in the Pacific Northwest and includes three state-of-art MRIs, two digital X-ray centers, a 5,000-square-foot physical therapy area, a world-class Spine Center, and top-notch general orthopaedic care. Luckily for Grays Harbor residents, this clinic is just a few minutes off Highway 101’s Mud Bay exit, making it a short one-hour drive to some of the best care in the state.
Orthopaedic care typically conjures images of a broken arm, knee surgery, or a hip replacement. These common conditions are some of what doctors at Oly Ortho see each day, but “bones” are just part of the job. The doctors at Olympia Orthopaedic Associates provide a full range of musculoskeletal services including orthopaedic spine care and neurosurgery.
Aside from the University of Washington, Olympia Orthopaedics is the only provider in Washington to offer comprehensive, world-class spinal care and has a designation as a “Spine Center of Excellence.” Within the Olympia Orthopaedic Associates Spine Center, two neurosurgeons and two orthopaedic spine surgeons see patients daily. Below, two of them share their experience and passion for helping patients live full, pain free lives through innovative techniques and cutting edge treatment.
Dr. Andrew Manista – Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon
Dr. Manista started his collegiate career far from Washington at The University of Florida in Coral Gables. Here he earned his undergraduate degree, not in the expected sciences, but in music, playing the upright bass with symphonies and rock bands alike.
He joined Oly Ortho in 2008 after completing a spinal surgery fellowship at John’s Hopkins Hospital in Maryland where he learned breakthrough technologies in spine surgery. Dr. Manista brings his expertise to Olympia Orthopaedic Associates where his easy smile and quick laugh make him a patient favorite. Manista’s title as “Orthopaedic Spine Surgeon” means he specializes in developmental and congenital spinal deformities as well as seeing patients facing issues from pain management to disc issues.
Dr. Manista joined a team of veteran surgeons including Dr. Yoshi Yamamoto and Dr. Clyde Carpenter. “I have grown to love the relationships I’m able to develop with my patients over time,” said Manista when asked what he enjoys most about his work at Oly Ortho. “As a spine surgeon, I don’t just see them once or twice. I’m able to create a lasting connection.”
Connection is valued, too, among the staff. “Being in this group at Oly Ortho is as good as it gets. The staff works hard and having a comprehensive team in such a terrific facility creates a real sense of cooperation, making us all better docs, giving the best care to our patients.”
Dr. Ryan Halpin – Neurosurgeon
Although he’s only been practicing at Olympia Orthopaedic’s Spine Center for the last three years, board certified Neurologist Dr. Ryan Halpin practically grew up at Olympia Orthopaedic Associates. He was raised in Olympia where he attended Capital High School and watched his father Dr. Patrick Halpin serve patients at Oly Ortho. Dr. Halpin earned his undergraduate degree in Chemistry with Honors from Brown University before moving to Northwestern University to complete his Medical Degree and Neurology residency. He returned to Olympia with his wife and four children, joining Oly Ortho’s experienced spine team.
As with all physicians at Oly Ortho, Dr. Halpin explores non-surgical options with patients first, managing pain and promoting healing. The Spine Center doctors work together with the expert physical therapy team as well as Oly Ortho’s injection specialists. When non-surgical interventions are not enough, Dr. Halpin and his colleagues are ready with the most advanced surgical procedures available. “The spine is where the two specialties of neurology and orthopaedics interconnect,” shares Dr. Halpin. This is seen clearly in the team approach embraced throughout Olympia Orthopaedics Associates.
When asked about his favorite part of the job he says, “I really enjoy the long-term doctor-patient relationships created during treatment. I like following up with patients, seeing people get better and improving their lives.” Dr. Halpin shares his excitement for working in the new Westside Clinic with easy flow between departments, focus on positive patient experience and comprehensive care in one building. “We can serve our patients so much better in this building. It functions well and allows us to focus on our patients and their needs.”
Olympia Orthopaedics may have “Olympia” in the name, but the physicians see people from throughout southwest Washington. Patients routinely travel south from Tacoma, north from Longview, east from Aberdeen, and west from Yakima for the top-notch care and a comprehensive menu of services. Whether it is X-rays for your child’s sprained wrist or world-class spinal surgeries, Olympia Orthopaedic Associates will help you heal and get your life back in motion.
