Diamonds in the Ether: Tuning in to Northwest Radio History

Join broadcaster and historian Feliks Banel as we look and listen back to the people, stations, and stories that made radio broadcasting a vital part of the culture of the Pacific Northwest.
Innovations in technology, programming, and business as far back as the 1920s made radio in this remote corner a little bit different than the rest of the United States, and connected the people of Washington with events and entertainment from across the country and around the world. With a mixture of vintage audio, historic images, and expert storytelling, radio historian and broadcaster Feliks Banel revisits the power of radio in the Evergreen State then and now, and looks ahead to the unpredictable future of local radio in our communities.

This event is cosponsored by Humanities Washington and the Friends of the Tumwater Timberland Library.

Forbidden Planet @ 7th Street Theatre
Sep 1 @ 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm

Anne Francis stars in Forbidden Planet at 7thStreet Theatre September 1-2

A story set in a universe in which man may be the ultimate monster, “Forbidden Planet” shows at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, September 1 and 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 2 at Grays Harbor’s historic 7thStreet Theatre in downtown Hoquiam.

One of the best of the atomic age science fiction films, this 1956 classic relies on neither giant mutant monsters nor bug-eyed aliens. Instead it combines intellect and action as it considers the nature of mankind as it struggles to find its place in outer space.

Walter Pidgeon plays Dr. Morbius, creator of Robbie the Robot but also keeper of a dark secret. Anne Francis provides classic ’50s sci-fi eye candy as his daughter, Altaira, and Leslie Nielsen, more than 30 years before his “Naked Gun” comedies, is the straight and serious spaceship captain out to solve the mystery, save the day, and get the girl.

Doors open at 7 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. Saturday showing, and 1:30 p.m. for the 2 p.m. Sunday showing. The theatre is at 313 7thStreet in downtown Hoquiam. Tickets are $6, available at the door or in advance at Harbor Drug and Crown Drug in Hoquiam, City Drug in Aberdeen, and online at www.7thstreettheatre.com.
