Come one come all.  Seaport Landing, Aberdeen’s new public waterfront and home port for the tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain, is asking members of the Grays Harbor community to volunteer their time to prepare Lady Washington’s home for her 25th birthday celebration.

The Historical Seaport “Salty Saturday” Project Parties are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday from now through May in preparation for our ships return on June 5th.  Salty Saturday projects are flexible and can accommodate individuals, groups or organizations.  Minors over 12 are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Our first Salty Saturday is scheduled for Saturday, March 1.

Inside and outside projects are available.  A Seaport Landing staff member will help volunteers find an appropriate project. Volunteers should dress warmly, even for indoor projects.  Volunteers interested in helping with gardening and landscaping should bring their own garden tools.

On Saturday, March 22, at 3 p.m. Michele Longo Eder, the author of Salt In Our Blood: The Memoir of a Fisherman’s Wife, will be signing her book at Westport Winery.

Salt In Our Blood recounts the moving story of a commercial fisherman’s wife, who is both a mother and a successful attorney on the Oregon coast. Set against the sudden loss at sea of the Eders’ oldest son, Ben, it is a tale of indescribable sadness but also one of resilience and courage – a stunning testament to one family’s strength and the memory of their remarkable son. In 2009, Salt in Our Blood received a first prize WILLA award in the category of creative non-fiction.

With her husband, Bob Eder, Michele is a co-owner of the F/ V Timmy Boy, a 60-foot steel vessel based out of Newport, Oregon. For more than 30 years, Michele has also practiced law along the Oregon coast, representing families, fishermen and their businesses. Currently, Michele is a member of the NOAA Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee and serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of Oregon State University.

Michelle will also be the guest speaker on Sunday, March 23 at 4:30 p.m. at Westport Winery as part of the WEfish Organization Kick-off. This group is a non-profit organization that invites all members of the community to learn more on the effort to support commercial fishing through promotion, education, outreach and service. WEfish, a new non-profit based out of Westport, WA, is hosting a kick-off event set for March 23rd, 4:30pm at the Westport Winery. The event will serve as an open house & sign-up opportunity for those inquiring about the goals of WEfish. The kick-off will host a guest speaker, Michele Longo Eder from Newport, OR. Michele is a commercial fisherman’s wife, and an attorney, who represents fishing families and their interests. She is also the author of the award-winning book, Salt in Our Blood: The Memoir of a Fisherman’s Wife. 

WEfish started in the fall of 2013, when group of individuals began meeting to discuss their interest in supporting the local commercial fishing community in the Westport, WA area. What began as an effort to form a traditional fishermen’s wives association in Westport, quickly transformed into an effort to support fishing families & community through promotion, education, outreach, and service. The name “WEfish” is designed to represent all associated with the fishing industry- families, businesses, and fishermen. WEfish is a collective effort to serve the fishing community on a social level. Our goal is to promote the economic value of this massive industry of which we hear so little, and to refresh and regain the sense of community pride that comes from generations of hard work and heritage.

WEfish is a fishery-wide, non-political group. Both men & women are welcome. Whether interested in reviving a lost-fishermen’s fund, finding opportunities to educate people on the value of commercial fishing, representing commercial fishing at local community events, or simply putting a family face on commercial fishing, WE fish is a great avenue to for those seeking to get involved in supporting the commercial fishing industry.

As a brand new organization, the goal of the kick-off event is to invite the community to join our efforts of supporting, promoting and serving the commercial fishing industry. We hope to generate membership, get people excited about their heritage, and create an easy, fun opportunity for people to both support and become involved in the industry.

WEfish is registered with the state as a non-profit, is working on their 501c tax-exempt status, and is lead by a board of directors and standard by-laws.

Fashion at the Sellar will be featuring clothes from, JT’s, Bodacious Beauties, Hangers, Harbor Shoes, Dennis Company, as well as jewelry from Stellar & Dot and makeup from Mary Kay. Julie Rajcich will also be on hand photographing our wonderful models and event. Ticket prices are $20.00 and a portion of ticket sales will go to benefit the Domestic Violence Center. A fun night for both men and womenat the same time raising money for a great organization.

On Saturday, March 29th, the Grays Harbor College HUB will turn into a 1920’s Speakeasy for the Annual Aberdeen Rotary Auction. Proceeds of this annual event helps the Aberdeen Rotary Foundation continue to provide grants and scholarships in the community.

Iconic Hollywood rebel, director, and director John Huston won his only Academy Awards with the 1948 classic adventure drama, “The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.” Starring Humphrey Bogart, the film is the next offering of the Silver Screen Classics Film Series.

Bogie plays down-on-his-luck Fred C. Dobbs, who, along with a partner, meets grizzled prospector Howard, in an Oscar-winning performance by the director’s father, Walter Huston, who died in 1950. Together, this uneasy alliance goes in search of gold and ultimately learns of the devastating power and peril of greed.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. Saturday showing and 1:30 pm for the 2:00 p.m. Sunday showing. Tickets are available at the door, and advance tickets are available at Harbor Drug in Hoquiam, City Drug in Aberdeen, and at Brown Paper Tickets.

In celebration of creating Grays Harbor’s first arboretum, Westport Winery is hosting its inaugural Arbor Festival on Sunday, April 13, from noon to 4p.m. As part of this event, the Grays Harbor and Pacific County Master Gardeners will unveil a bench in the winery’s new Don Tapio Dwarf Conifer Collection in appreciation for Tapio’s considerable service to the community. This dedication will be held at 2 p.m. in the winery gardens. A reception will follow under the winery’s solar panels.

At 1 p.m. the winery will lead its weekly Backstage Winemaker’s Tour of their production facility. The price to join this tour is $5 per person. Wine club members may join this tour at no charge. Check in for this tour is 12:45 p.m. at the tasting bar.

At 3 p.m. winery co-owner, Kim Roberts will lead the first walking tour of the arboretum and a discussion of the winery’s design plans for the garden. All guests purchasing plants in the winery’s nursery will be given a free tree for Arbor Day. The winery’s arboretum was the brain child of retired WSU County Extension Agent Don Tapio.

For both the production and the arboretum tour good walking shoes and the ability to walk on rough surfaces over a moderate distance is required as these areas are working farms.

Jessica Marie Porter will be performing in the winery’s Farm to Fork Restaurant & Bakery from noon to 4 p.m. Full wine tasting will be offered at both of the winery’s bars (but not in the restaurant).

In May, the state celebrates the 100 year anniversary of the WSU Extension Program. Don Tapio’s advice to the Roberts family who created Westport Winery will be featured in a story about the impact of the extension program and agents.
