Program Overview

Our curriculum is unbiased, factual sexual health information supported by the Washington State Health Education k-12 Standards. Participants will learn about anatomical terms, pregnancy and STI prevention, puberty changes, gender identity, gender norms and social pressure, sexual orientation, and how to be an ally.

The social-emotional skills taught in CMCB® align with the Washington State Social Emotional Learning (SEL) standards for k-12, which include practicing giving and denying consent, social media moderation, and using nonviolent communication to set and maintain boundaries. Through experiential learning, participants will practice several evidence-based self-regulation and self-care strategies, including mindfulness activities, intentional social interactions and protective measures for their mental health.

By the end of the program, participants will have developed their body literacy practice, learned several self-regulation strategies and practiced advocating for themselves and others to create a more just society.

The FOSLS LAKE SYLVIA STATE PARK FALL FESTIVAL continues the tradition for our 12th year!
Come join us on SUNDAY, September 10th, 2023 from 8:30 – 4:00 for a day filled with fun and family activities.

If you enjoy running we have trail Races that begin at 8:30 am. From 10 – 4, you can find one of a kind art and hand crafted treasures at the Artisans Market and eat delicious food while enjoying great live music by talented local acts all on the peaceful shores of beautiful Lake Sylvia. There will also be a kayak paddling adventure, a Watershed Festival by the GH Stream Team, Galaxy Harbor Dancers and educational exhibits in the Legacy Pavilion. You can decorate a pumpkin or take a group photo in our photo booth and we will have kids activities as well.

Park for free at Simpson School (519 Simpson Ave W, Montesano WA), and take a free shuttle to the Festival. Parking inside the park is limited and requires a Discover Pass. Grays Harbor Pride kicks off on Friday, September 22 with a free/pay what you can all ages dance, Pride Prom 2023, at Events on Emerson in Hoquiam.

On Saturday, September 23, Grays Harbor Pride Festival starts at 1 pm at the Historical Seaport with free, family friendly activities, vendors, music, and entertainment. There will also be tours available on the Tall Ship Lady Washington.

This year, we will be hosting a concert by an iconic multi-platinum artist, Mary Lambert. That’s right! Mary Lambert will be putting on a free show at Grays Harbor Pride 2023! Everyone will be talking about this.

At 7:00 pm, stay for the free nighttime Drag Show event, hosted by Seattle’s Premier Drag King, Ceasar Heart! Amazing performers come from all over Washington to support our local LGBTQIA+ community. You won’t want to miss this!

Roxanne Lowe, President of the Grays Harbor and WA State Genealogy Societies, will present a program on writing your own obituary at the McCleary Museum and Event Center.

The 9th Annual Bigfoot Brewfest is a celebration of quality craft beer, ciders and other brews from around the Pacific Northwest, with an emphasis on flavors and adventure.
Enjoy cool ocean air while you sample craft beverages from over 20 unique breweries. Listen to live music and eat delicious food while stretching your adventure muscles and trying new flavors, games and physical prowess.
Details: Food trucks are on site serving up some of the most delicious food you could hope for. Two bands are playing live, the fan favorites, Deerswerver and the Mike & Frank Duo.

Fish Wars: Tribal Rights, Resistance, and Resiliency in the Pacific Northwest-Kestrel Smith
In the 1960s and 70s, tribes throughout the Pacific Northwest launched protests and acts of civil disobedience to pressure the government to recognize their fishing rights. Now known as the “Fish Wars,” the lessons from these events remain relevant today.? In this talk, professor Kestrel A. Smith surveys the evidence and events before and after the Fish Wars, which rocked Washington State for decades. Encompassing tribal sovereignty, treaties, statehood, and the fish themselves, the Fish Wars are a powerful reminder of our interconnectedness. Understanding these events is a first, and essential, step in achieving social, cultural, and political justice.

And It Has Pockets! The Battle for Women’s Clothing Equality – Diane Johnston
How many times have you heard someone wearing women’s clothing exclaim, “And it has pockets!” Comparisons have shown that modern garments designed for women have about half the storage space of clothing designed for men. From their invention, pockets in women’s fashion have represented independence—so much so that in the 18th century, laws were enacted to strip women of their personal liberty by making the contents of their pockets the property of their husband. The right to have pockets went hand-in-hand with the right to vote. And people today are still speaking out about the inequality between men’s and women’s clothing based on this simple storage system.

Join costume designer Diane Johnston to dig into the pockets of the past, tracing the history of the humble pocket to determine if the battle for equality may still be decided by a few inches of extremely influential fabric.

Westport’s famous Ocosta Booster Club Crab Feed is legendary! The 2024 extravaganza is Saturday, March 9 from noon to 6pm. This over-the-top fundraiser began in 1993. All proceeds benefit scholarships and programs for Ocosta School District students from Westport, Grayland, North Cove and Tokeland, Washington.

Westport, arguably Washington’s best beach community, is famous for many things. Yet, this annual event is one of the most popular drawing visitors from around the state to an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord of Dungeness crab, cocktail sauce, spaghetti, garlic bread, and coleslaw. Beer, wine, cocktails, and sodas are sold separately.  

Event organizers said, “Our generous fishing families donate over 3000 pounds of fresh local Dungeness Crab.” This level of community support with a cadre of volunteers make this event worth staying the weekend in Unforgettable Grays Harbor County.

All ages are invited to attend this epic dinner at the Ocosta Rec Hall located at 45 Ocosta 6^th Street. Although this is an Aberdeen address, the rec hall is located between Westport and Aberdeen, just a few blocks off State Route 105. 

Guests ages 13 and up can enjoy this feast for $40, it is $20 for those ages 6 to 12, kids age five and under are free. Tickets are available only at the door. The Booster Club accepts cash and credit cards.

Humanities Washington Speaker Event: Un-American Activities: The Blacklist Era and Hollywood-Robert Horton
“Are you now or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?”

The answer to this question—or the refusal to answer it—cast hundreds of lives into turmoil at the dawn of the Cold War. The Red Scare that erupted in the 1940s allowed the House Committee on Un-American Activities to grab headlines by parading prominent Hollywood figures before the cameras. Witnesses could either defy the hearings at the risk of their own careers, or “name names”—inform on their colleagues and friends. The resulting blacklist threw many moviemaking professionals out of work.

This presentation, illustrated with film clips, tells the stories from this heartbreaking and scandalous era, and how notables such as Humphrey Bogart, Elia Kazan, and Charlie Chaplin were swept up in the frenzy. We’ll also ask a question: With today’s politics at a boiling point, are we living in such a period again?
