Razor Clam Dig @ Grays Harbor Beaches

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) approved eight days of digging, beginning May 13. WDFW gave the okay for the series of digs after marine toxin tests showed the clams are safe to eat. No digging will be allowed on any beach after noon.

The agency also announced a list of proposed digs, which would run May 27 through June 1. Final approval of these digs will depend on marine toxin tests that will be conducted closer to the start date, said Dan Ayres, WDFW shellfish manager. The agency will announce final approval based on the results of the tests.

The following are approved and proposed dig dates, time and locations.

Salty Saturday Project Party @ Historic Seaport

Come one come all.  Seaport Landing, Aberdeen’s new public waterfront and home port for the tall ships Lady Washington and Hawaiian Chieftain, is asking members of the Grays Harbor community to volunteer their time to prepare Lady Washington’s home for her 25th birthday celebration.

The Historical Seaport “Salty Saturday” Project Parties are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday from now through May in preparation for our ships return on June 5th.  Salty Saturday projects are flexible and can accommodate individuals, groups or organizations.  Minors over 12 are welcome, but must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Our first Salty Saturday is scheduled for Saturday, March 1.

Inside and outside projects are available.  A Seaport Landing staff member will help volunteers find an appropriate project. Volunteers should dress warmly, even for indoor projects.  Volunteers interested in helping with gardening and landscaping should bring their own garden tools.

4,200 mile Charity Bike Ride Kick-off @ Pacific Beach

GoTeam, a nationwide endurance team, will begin its bike ride in Pacific Beach and then stop in Olympia that same day as part of its 4,200-mile trip across America. The ride will conclude on July 25, 2014 in Wilmington, North Carolina. After leaving Pacific Beach, GoTeam’s second stop will be in Olympia.

Saddlebags are backpacks for bicycles.  The idea of these meetings is:

  1. Arrive on a bike
  2. Discuss the route to be ridden
  3. Place the map, paper and writing utensils in your saddlebag
  4. Ride the route, stop and record when needed
  5. Regroup at a designated location to discuss findings

If a person does not want to ride, they are welcome to come for the discussions and either wait for the bike riders to return or walk part of the route.

Flag Day Parade @ Ocean Shores

Spend a fun-filled day in Ocean Shores. Watch over 60 floats and entries honoring Old Glory in one of the only Flag Day Parades in Western Washington.

Participating in the parade will be floats and marching bands from Ocean Shores and neighboring communities. Each year as a lead in to the Parade, ACT sponsors a Essay, Poster and Coloring Contest for the Children of the North Beach School District. Children in Pre-School and Kindergarten participate in a Flag Coloring Contest with prizes awarded to each age group.

Children in Grades 1 – 9 may participate in the Poster Contest, these will be judged and first, second and third Place winner for Boys and Girls will be selected. High School Students take part in an optional Essay Contest, this years theme is “What the Flag Means To Me”, the essays are judged and and a First and Second Place Boys and Girls winner is selected.

The winning students receive a check, a trip to Olympia, observation of the Senate in session a meeting with the Lieutenant Governor and a special lunch. Each year more than 150 students compete, the winning students will ride on the ACT float during the parade and the essay will be published in the Local Observer Newspaper.

Lady Washington Walk-on Tours @ Westport Marina

Lady Washington, the Official Ship of the State of Washington, will help the City of Westport celebrate its 100th birthday with a visit June 27-29. The vessel will offer walk-on tours and a special Fireworks Sail for viewing the city’s fireworks show. Here’s the ship’s schedule:

6/27: 11:30 a.m., arrival of Lady Washington at Westport Marina

6/27: Noon to 5 p.m., walk-on tours, $3 donation per person requested

6/28: Noon to 5 p.m., walk-on tours, $3 donation per person requested

6/28: 8 p.m. to 11 p.m., Fireworks Sail, $43-$63

6/29: 8 a.m., Lady Washington departs for Aberdeen.

The Fireworks Sail offers a chance for guests to watch the celebratory fireworks from the deck of a tall ship as it sails in Grays Harbor.

Guests will board the ship before departure at 8 p.m. Groups of eight or more purchasing tickets together automatically receive a 15 percent per ticket discount. The show is expected to start at dusk.

Lady Washington is celebrating the 25th anniversary of her launch this year. The ship will also appear at Rusty Scupper Pirate Daze in Westport June 20-22.
