Jinglelights is a dazzling outdoor, Christmas lights show located in Central Park. Each show lasts 40 minutes and includes 140,000 lights synchronized to cheerful, holiday music. Hot coco and a campfire are usually available for visitors. The show is a fundraiser for the local “Shop with a Cop” program with a donation can on site. The show begins on December 2 and runs through December 27. Community members can enjoy this lively event any night of the week, except Mondays and Tuesdays. Show times are hourly from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with an additional 9:00 p.m. show on Friday and Saturday. Poor weather conditions may require the show to be canceled for a certain night. Razor clam diggers can fill their limits at Copalis Beach over the Christmas holiday now that state shellfish managers have approved a three-day opening.

The huge pop culture and marketing sensation that is the new “Star Wars” movie seems ripe for parody. Serial funnyman Mel Brooks had the same thought way back in 1986, when he developed the space opera send-up, “Spaceballs.” That is the first film showing in 2016 at the 7th Street Theatre in downtown Hoquiam, screening at 7:30 pm Friday and Saturday, January 15 and 16.

Released in 1987, “Spaceballs” stars Rick Moranis, John Candy and Bill Pullman, with ample screen time for Brooks. Forget the plot, as it exists only to provide multiple platforms for every kind of joke, jab, insult and other style of film reference, all aimed at sci-fi movies generally and the Star Wars films in particular.  As with all Mel Brooks films, the comedy comes fast and furious, with levels of taste, and/or lack thereof, to appeal to a wide range of non-serious movie-goers.

“Take Your Honey to Hoquiam” is a dinner-and-movie promotion that also includes two local florists. When you buy dinner for two at any of the participating restaurants and pubs, or make a qualifying purchase from either florist, during the week of February 7, you will receive two free tickets to the movie. Each participating restaurant and sponsor has 50 free movie tickets available through this promotion.

“Groundhog Day” is the last film and among the best that director, writer and actor Harold Ramis worked on with actor, comedian and all-around goofball Bill Murray. With a shared legacy that includes the movies, “Caddyshack,” “Stripes” and both “Ghostbusters,” Ramis and Murray had become experts at delivering wildly imaginative, thoroughly enjoyable craziness.

This time out, Murray plays a cynical local TV weatherman who is none too happy with being sent yet again to Punxsutawney, PA, to cover Groundhog Day. Forced by an impending blizzard to stay the night, Murray spends the next day figuring out that, incredibly, ridiculously, he seems doomed to repeat Groundhog Day over and over and over. MacDowell plays Murray’s TV producer and eventual love interest, and as if there wasn’t enough silliness to satisfy everyone, Murray’s old “Saturday Night Live” pal, Chris Elliot, is on board also. Rated PG, the movie is family friendly.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. showings. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door.
