Financial Aid for College Workshop @ Grays Harbor College
Jan 16 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Looking for a way to get one-on-one help with navigating the Financial Aid maze? Confused by complicated documents and tax information needed to get money to help pay for college? There is a great event happening Thursday, January 16th from 6-9 p.m. at Grays Harbor College that is designed to help. This free event will have trained facilitators to help students and families complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) paperwork, learn about Financial Aid, get Scholarship ideas and ask important questions one-on-one.

The evening will begin in the Grays Harbor College HUB where students and families will be directed to the many available resources. Feel free to come in anytime between 6 and 9 p.m. and people will be there to assist you.

Filling out these documents and applying for student aid can be very helpful to most families. Most higher education students receive financial aid! 63 percent of college and university students receive an average of $7,400 a year to help pay for college. With tuition costs on the rise this funding becomes more important than ever before.

To pre-register for this event or for more information, visit www.collegegoalsundaywa.org. The site has a complete list of the materials you will need to bring with you in order to complete the FAFSA to the best of your ability. There is also a Facebook page which will have up-to-date information on the event and directions. Look for “TRiO Grays Harbor College” to like the event and stay informed.

Author Talk @ Westport Winery
Mar 22 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

On Saturday, March 22, at 3 p.m. Michele Longo Eder, the author of Salt In Our Blood: The Memoir of a Fisherman’s Wife, will be signing her book at Westport Winery.

Salt In Our Blood recounts the moving story of a commercial fisherman’s wife, who is both a mother and a successful attorney on the Oregon coast. Set against the sudden loss at sea of the Eders’ oldest son, Ben, it is a tale of indescribable sadness but also one of resilience and courage – a stunning testament to one family’s strength and the memory of their remarkable son. In 2009, Salt in Our Blood received a first prize WILLA award in the category of creative non-fiction.

With her husband, Bob Eder, Michele is a co-owner of the F/ V Timmy Boy, a 60-foot steel vessel based out of Newport, Oregon. For more than 30 years, Michele has also practiced law along the Oregon coast, representing families, fishermen and their businesses. Currently, Michele is a member of the NOAA Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee and serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of Oregon State University.

Michelle will also be the guest speaker on Sunday, March 23 at 4:30 p.m. at Westport Winery as part of the WEfish Organization Kick-off. This group is a non-profit organization that invites all members of the community to learn more on the effort to support commercial fishing through promotion, education, outreach and service. For more information email, or visit the WEfish Facebook page.

Westport Winery and Vineyards By-the-Sea with its unique sculpture garden, lavender labyrinth, musical fence, 9-hole executive golf course, giant chess set, outdoor scrabble game, and grape maze, is located halfway between Aberdeen and Westport. Their award-winning wines are exclusively available at this location. The tasting room, gift shop, produce market and bakery are open daily. The restaurant is open for lunch daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and for dinner on Friday and Saturday from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. For more information contact Westport Winery at 360-648-2224 or visit the website at www.westportwinery.com.
