Jinglelights is a dazzling outdoor, Christmas lights show located in Central Park. Each show lasts 40 minutes and includes 140,000 lights synchronized to cheerful, holiday music. Hot coco and a campfire are usually available for visitors. The show is a fundraiser for the local “Shop with a Cop” program with a donation can on site. The show begins on December 2 and runs through December 27. Community members can enjoy this lively event any night of the week, except Mondays and Tuesdays. The huge pop culture and marketing sensation that is the new “Star Wars” movie seems ripe for parody. Serial funnyman Mel Brooks had the same thought way back in 1986, when he developed the space opera send-up, “Spaceballs.” That is the first film showing in 2016 at the 7th Street Theatre in downtown Hoquiam, screening at 7:30 pm Friday and Saturday, January 15 and 16.

Released in 1987, “Spaceballs” stars Rick Moranis, John Candy and Bill Pullman, with ample screen time for Brooks. Forget the plot, as it exists only to provide multiple platforms for every kind of joke, jab, insult and other style of film reference, all aimed at sci-fi movies generally and the Star Wars films in particular.  As with all Mel Brooks films, the comedy comes fast and furious, with levels of taste, and/or lack thereof, to appeal to a wide range of non-serious movie-goers.

“Take Your Honey to Hoquiam” is a dinner-and-movie promotion that also includes two local florists. When you buy dinner for two at any of the participating restaurants and pubs, or make a qualifying purchase from either florist, during the week of February 7, you will receive two free tickets to the movie. Each participating restaurant and sponsor has 50 free movie tickets available through this promotion.

With a shared legacy that includes the movies, “Caddyshack,” “Stripes” and both “Ghostbusters,” Ramis and Murray had become experts at delivering wildly imaginative, thoroughly enjoyable craziness.

This time out, Murray plays a cynical local TV weatherman who is none too happy with being sent yet again to Punxsutawney, PA, to cover Groundhog Day. Forced by an impending blizzard to stay the night, Murray spends the next day figuring out that, incredibly, ridiculously, he seems doomed to repeat Groundhog Day over and over and over. MacDowell plays Murray’s TV producer and eventual love interest, and as if there wasn’t enough silliness to satisfy everyone, Murray’s old “Saturday Night Live” pal, Chris Elliot, is on board also. Rated PG, the movie is family friendly.

James Clarkson spent 20 years on the Aberdeen police force. Before that, he was a military police investigator, so solving mysteries has been at the heart of his long law enforcement career. These days, Clarkson’s investigations focus on outer space, the possibility of life on other planets, and of earthly visits from non-human space travelers.

Clarkson will talk about his work as a UFO investigator at two Grays Harbor County Timberland libraries on February 27.

Clarkson has written several books on this subject, “Tell My Story: June Crain, The Air Force & UFOs,” and “Westport UFO Crash Retrieval Event: A Case Study.”  Both books are available at the Timberland Regional Library. The Friends of the Westport and Aberdeen Timberland libraries are sponsoring these programs.

The next classic film scheduled for the historic 7^th Street Theatre in downtown Hoquiam offers a double-double whammy of two film noir icons behind the camera and fascinating on-screen portrayals of a pair of “Strangers on a Train” The 1951 film will have showings at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 5 and 6.

Iconic detective fiction writer Raymond Chandler teamed with director Alfred Hitchcock in the story of two “Strangers on a Train,” who become involved in murder and betrayal. Farley Granger and Robert Walker are the two baddies.

Although not as famous as many of Hitchcock’s films, “Strangers” is nonetheless revered as one of his very best and most unusual efforts. A fan review calls it “his most riotous, unrestrained film, a gleeful mélange of vicious black comedy, exciting suspense, mocking manipulation, and astonishing flights of fancy.”
