First Presbyterian Church of Aberdeen and local community experts are hosting a FREE collaborative community event to provide basic information on a variety of topics that individuals and families face as they or their loved ones get older. You are invited to join in for discussion and learn more about end of life planning. A light lunch and refreshments will be provided. March 28th will be Grays Harbor Stream Teams first Biology and Brews pub talk at Mount Olympus Brewing in Aberdeen WA.

Kiley Smith, the Grays Harbor Noxious Weed Coordinator will be speaking on invasive and native plant species and how they relate to our community.

The talk will start at 5:00 pm and go till 6:00 pm, I will be around till 7:00 pm to answer questions.

The Radio Fryer food truck will be at Mount Olympus Brewing to serve burgers, hot dogs, and fries.

April 18th will be Grays Harbor Stream Teams second Biology and Brews pub talk at Mount Olympus Brewing in Aberdeen WA.

Jennifer Riedmayer, Nonpoint Water Quality Specialist with the Washington State Department of Ecology, will be speaking on water quality and the Newaukum Basin.

The talk starts at 5:00 pm, I will be around after to answer questions.

Please join us at Village Concepts of Hoquiam – Channel Point Village as we welcome Kim Wyman, Washington Secretary of State, who will speak about her office and the programs she oversees, including elections and Legacy Washington, which profiles extraordinary Washingtonians. Refreshments served.

Local BBQ masters and musicians will be coming together to create delicious food and soulful music at a Family BBQ and Roots Music Show this Saturday.
Grampa Kenny’s BBQ presents this fun family event at the Ocasta Recreation Hall, Saturday, May 11, 4-7 p.m.
Local musicians set to perform include Annymay Redeemed, Chris House, Guidon Bear, Rick Coval, and other local performers.

Profits from the event benefit sending local student musician Elijah House to Lutheran Summer Music in Indiana at Valparaiso University.

Tim Jenkins is one of the Pacific Northwest’s leading ballad singers. He has been performing folk music for more than forty years and has a vast repertoire of traditional folk songs, from ancient Scottish ballads to Delta blues to cowboy songs. He’ll be performing songs he’s written based on tales he was told by his Great Uncle Harry–the Oregon Buckaroo.

This is a free, family-oriented Community Carnival and Concert. Lots of fun booths and activities such as: games, trout tank, horses, face-painting, food vendors, a kiddie train, photo booth, and a fire-truck demo by Hoquiam firefighters. On September 12th, at 6 pm at Mount Olympus Brewing in Aberdeen, Teal Waterstrat, a US Fish & Wildlife Service Biologist, will be presenting on freshwater mussels in the Chehalis River & their ecological importance.

The Build Off Early Learning Fun Fair is a free family fun event that will challenge children’s imaginations. Participants will try to build the tallest structure out of Keva planks in hopes of winning great prizes. After testing their building expertise, they will join our fun fair for art and science projects, safety games, and kids’ activities presented by a host of community organizations dedicated to early learning.

Promised Land is an award winning social justice documentary that follows two tribes in the Pacific Northwest: the Duwamish and the Chinook, as they fight for the restoration of treaty rights they’ve long been denied. This program is part of Timberland Reads Together, featuring “There, There” by Tommy Orange and Native Voices, focused on Indigenous Peoples history and culture.

This presentation will briefly highlight the natural and cultural history of the Quinault Region. Most of the presentation will look at the events and activities leading up to the land and river conditions we see today, and what the Quinault Indian Nation has done and plans to do with its natural resources and economic development.

Please join us for “Health, Hope and Heritage on the Harbors,” a mini-symposium on the traditional culture of Grays Harbor and Pacific Counties. December 12, 2019 at Events on Emerson in Hoquiam (212 4th Street). 5:30pm to 8:30pm. Maritime practices, tribal weaving and woodwork, and drag are among the numerous traditions that are present in the Twin Harbors. This event features panel discussions that will not only explore area traditions, but also examine their impact on the social and physical health of the community. “Health, Hope and Heritage on the Harbors” caps a year-long collaboration with Window Seat Media to document traditions in the Twin Harbors as part of our “Cultural Traditions Survey” program.

On November 3, 1970 by special election and signed off by former Washington Secretary of State Ludlow Kramer, the community of Ocean Shores became a certified city. As such, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Ocean Shores’ cityhood.

Anniversary events will begin with a kick-off celebration recognizing the Welcome to Ocean Shores sign, erected 20 years ago at the city gates, as a significant historical feature.

Hosting this event, the Museum of the North Beach and Ocean Shores Coastal Interpretive Center with missions to preserve and share area history have joined forces to erect an informational plaque explaining that artist Judy McVay created the sign. The Mayor and City Council are expected to attend.

Judy McVay along with her brothers pioneered chainsaw carving as an artform, founded the chainsaw carving expo at the Puyallup Fair in the 1980’s, were instrumental in creating local carving events, and Judy was the first Washington woman to win a chainsaw carving competition. In addition to creating the Welcome to Ocean Shores sign, her work can be seen all along the Washington Coast, the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway (Hwy 101) and many other locations.

In Ocean Shores, Judy’s work can be viewed at Moby Dick’s on Point Brown Ave. where her “Sand Castle” sign hangs as well as inside the Convention Center vestibule where collaborative pieces created by Judy and her son, Boaz Backus can be found. Boaz along with brother, Steve founded the “sawdust” portion of Ocean Shores’ famed Sand and Sawdust Festival.

“The Welcome to Ocean Shores sign is a highly photographed, significant part of the experience when entering the city and should be recognized as such,” said Coastal Interpretive Center Board President, Nancy Eldridge. “The Museum of the North Beach and our friends at the Coastal Interpretive Center are proud to recognize this historical artifact,” added Museum of the North Beach Executive Director, Kelly Calhoun.

Sign dedication will commence at noon, Saturday January 18, 2020 at the city gates. A historical marker will be placed near the sign and this event will officially kick-off the year long Ocean Shores 50th anniversary celebration. Everyone is encouraged and invited to attend!
