Silver Screen Classics Film Series: South Pacific @ 7th Street Theater
May 4 @ 2:00 pm
Silver Screen Classics Film Series: South Pacific @ 7th Street Theater | Hoquiam | Washington | United States

One of the most beloved of Hollywood’s movie musicals, “South Pacific” is the next offering of the Silver Screen Classics Film Series at the historic 7th Street Theatre in downtown Hoquiam.

By 1958, the idea of movie adaptations of the incredibly successful Broadway stage musicals of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II was a proven formula. And what better material than the play that won a Pulitzer Prize for drama, and five Tony Awards? “South Pacific” followed a huge theatrical run of 1,925 Broadway performances, and was an immediate hit on the silver screen. The story centers on an unlikely romance and the intensifying war in the South Pacific, circa 1943. Among many elements, the film is noted for the cinematic use of the stage technique of employing colored filters for background lighting to convey participants’ moods.

Classic Film Series: Jaws @ 7th Street Theater
May 16 @ 7:30 pm
Classic Film Series: Jaws @ 7th Street Theater | Hoquiam | Washington | United States

Director Steven Spielberg had a total of less than a dozen hours of television and one feature film under his belt in 1974 when he took on a project that would dramatically change his life and seriously scare millions. “Jaws” became the top grossing movie of 1975, won three Academy Awards and sent Spielberg’s career skyrocketing. The film will screen at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, May 16 and 17 at Grays Harbor’s historic 7th Street Theatre in downtown Hoquiam.

Based on the novel by Peter Benchley, “Jaws” is the tale of a huge great white shark that begins feeding on swimmers, and the efforts of an unlikely trio to battle the beast. The Oscar-winning theme music by John Williams remains instantly recognizable nearly 40 years after it was first heard. The line of dialogue that became part of the pop culture idiom was actually ad-libbed by star Roy Schieder,  “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Sharkey’s of Ocean Shores has teamed with the 7th Street Theatre to offer a variety of “Jaws” and shark-themed merchandise, and 10% of sales will go to the theatre. There will also be a person in a shark costume available for fun photos.

Doors open at 7:00 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. showings. Tickets are available at the door, or in advance from Brown Paper Tickets and at Harbor Drug in Hoquiam and City Drug in Aberdeen.
