The huge pop culture and marketing sensation that is the new “Star Wars” movie seems ripe for parody. Serial funnyman Mel Brooks had the same thought way back in 1986, when he developed the space opera send-up, “Spaceballs.” That is the first film showing in 2016 at the 7th Street Theatre in downtown Hoquiam, screening at 7:30 pm Friday and Saturday, January 15 and 16.
Released in 1987, “Spaceballs” stars Rick Moranis, John Candy and Bill Pullman, with ample screen time for Brooks. Forget the plot, as it exists only to provide multiple platforms for every kind of joke, jab, insult and other style of film reference, all aimed at sci-fi movies generally and the Star Wars films in particular. As with all Mel Brooks films, the comedy comes fast and furious, with levels of taste, and/or lack thereof, to appeal to a wide range of non-serious movie-goers.
Doors open at 7:00 p.m. for the 7:30 p.m. Saturday showing and 1:30 p.m. for the 2:00 p.m. Sunday showing. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door. Advance tickets are available at Harbor Drug in Hoquiam, City Drug in Aberdeen, and at www.brownpapertickets.com.
