Veterans Day Celebration @ Downtown Elma | Elma | Washington | United States

The eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month marked the signing of the armistice to end the Great War, or what would later be known as WWI, in 1918. One year later, President Wilson declared the day Armistice Day, and soldiers of the war were celebrated-those who had survived marched in hometown parades and were honored with speeches by local and national politicians. In 1938, Armistice Day was voted a national holiday, and then in 1971 became Veterans Day, honoring veterans of all wars, under President Nixon.

Elma VFW Bill Mann Post 1948 and Auxiliary invites you to share in a time to remember our friends who’ve served and lost their lives and a day to thank current and former military service members for their service.  Elma Veterans Day Celebration begins on November 11 with a Memorial Ceremony at 11:00 a.m.  Ceremony is at the Elma Veteran’s Memorial park, located on Main Street (East side of the viaduct).

The Grand Parade is at 1:00 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Elma.  Covered seating and an announcer can be located on Third and Main Street at the Elma Visitors Station.  Three prizes for parade entries are being offered: Most Patriotic Entry $100; Judges Choice $50; and Most Creative $25. For entry information contact Barb Green 360-482-3365 or email greenelma@comcast.net.

Immediately following the parade join us for a Veterans Day Luncheon at the Elma Grange, hosted by VFW Post 1948 and Auxiliary at Elma Grange, 4th and Waldrip Street.  Lunch is a donation of $5 or free to parade participants.  Enjoy looking at the Veterans Honor Quilt Display at the Grange during lunch.
