In February, we promote healthy smiles by joining with our dental community to offer free dental screenings right inside the Museum! Kids can pretend to be the dentist in our Puget Sound Dental Office exhibit and meet Amazon of Olympia as Wonder Woman and as Captain Carter (see below for dates and times). From sewing a toothy pillow to exploring super-sized animal teeth (fangs and sabers of giant cats), families can enjoy fun and engaging dental health activities all month long.

Youth from 6th to 12th grades are invited to compete in the Southwest Washington High School and Middle School Chess Championships, to be held Saturday, February 3 at Centralia College. Students of all skill levels are welcome to play.
Both tournaments are regional championships, limited to students in western Washington who reside south and west of Pierce County. The high school championship is both an individual and team event. Winning high school teams qualify to play in the 58th annual Washington State High School Chess Team Championships, to be held March 2 at Interlake High School in Bellevue.
Last year‘s first ever SW WA Regional saw 280 players register, with Olympia HS finishing 1st, W.F.West (Chehalis) 2nd, and Columbia River HS (Vancouver) 3rd.
Entry is free, and the tourney is directed by WHSCA, the Washington High School Chess Association (non-profit). Full tourney details at http://northwestchess.info/swwa2024.html .

Fish Wars: Tribal Rights, Resistance, and Resiliency in the Pacific Northwest-Kestrel Smith
In the 1960s and 70s, tribes throughout the Pacific Northwest launched protests and acts of civil disobedience to pressure the government to recognize their fishing rights. Now known as the “Fish Wars,” the lessons from these events remain relevant today.? In this talk, professor Kestrel A. Smith surveys the evidence and events before and after the Fish Wars, which rocked Washington State for decades. Encompassing tribal sovereignty, treaties, statehood, and the fish themselves, the Fish Wars are a powerful reminder of our interconnectedness. Understanding these events is a first, and essential, step in achieving social, cultural, and political justice.

And It Has Pockets! The Battle for Women’s Clothing Equality – Diane Johnston
How many times have you heard someone wearing women’s clothing exclaim, “And it has pockets!” Comparisons have shown that modern garments designed for women have about half the storage space of clothing designed for men. From their invention, pockets in women’s fashion have represented independence—so much so that in the 18th century, laws were enacted to strip women of their personal liberty by making the contents of their pockets the property of their husband. The right to have pockets went hand-in-hand with the right to vote. And people today are still speaking out about the inequality between men’s and women’s clothing based on this simple storage system.
Join costume designer Diane Johnston to dig into the pockets of the past, tracing the history of the humble pocket to determine if the battle for equality may still be decided by a few inches of extremely influential fabric.

Experience a rewarding day connecting with others volunteers and the families you’ll help.
Since 2014, We’ve made more then 1 million homes safer and helped save lives.

Westport’s famous Ocosta Booster Club Crab Feed is legendary! The 2024 extravaganza is Saturday, March 9 from noon to 6pm. This over-the-top fundraiser began in 1993. All proceeds benefit scholarships and programs for Ocosta School District students from Westport, Grayland, North Cove and Tokeland, Washington.
Westport, arguably Washington’s best beach community, is famous for many things. Yet, this annual event is one of the most popular drawing visitors from around the state to an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord of Dungeness crab, cocktail sauce, spaghetti, garlic bread, and coleslaw. Beer, wine, cocktails, and sodas are sold separately.
Event organizers said, “Our generous fishing families donate over 3000 pounds of fresh local Dungeness Crab.” This level of community support with a cadre of volunteers make this event worth staying the weekend in Unforgettable Grays Harbor County.
All ages are invited to attend this epic dinner at the Ocosta Rec Hall located at 45 Ocosta 6th Street. Although this is an Aberdeen address, the rec hall is located between Westport and Aberdeen, just a few blocks off State Route 105.
Guests ages 13 and up can enjoy this feast for $40, it is $20 for those ages 6 to 12, kids age five and under are free. Tickets are available only at the door. The Booster Club accepts cash and credit cards.
