During Advent, Saron Lutheran Church will host an exhibition of visual art and writing that responds to the quiet, anticipatory aspects of the season. This show, “Out of Darkness,” showcases art and poetry which sets a reflective mood, serving as a place of rest and deeper contemplation in the midst of the hectic and sometimes superficial rush of holiday bustle.
The exhibit will run November 22 – December 21. The public is invited to take a break from holiday shopping and stop by during special open hours on Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m., Saturdays from 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., and Sundays from 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
An opening reception, complete with music, refreshments, and readings. Come see these creative, personal interpretations of what “Out of Darkness” can mean.

Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney and Danny Kaye star in the 1954 release, with songs and music by the legendary composer Irving Berlin. The feel-good story has WWII veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis (Crosby and Kaye) teaming up to become a top song-and-dance act and becoming romantically involved with sisters Betty and Judy Haynes (played by Clooney and Vera-Ellen) who also have a song-and-dance act. When Betty and Judy travel to a Vermont lodge to perform a Christmas show, Wallace and Davis follow, only to find their former commander, General Waverly, is the lodge owner. A series of romantic mix-ups ensue as the performers try to help the General save the failing lodge.
The film features Berlin’s title tune that had already become a holiday staple, “White Christmas.” The song was originally heard in 1942’s Holiday Inn, and received the Academy Award for Best Song that year, Berlin’s only Oscar win.
Crosby was a native of Tacoma, WA, and won a Best Actor Oscar for 1944’s Going My Way. He is a member of the Radio Hall of Fame and is widely considered to be popular culture’s first multi-media star, having topped the charts on radio, with movies, television specials and a recording career that included 38 number one singles, more than Elvis Presley or The Beatles.
