Listen to selections from oral histories gathered by Harbor area students come to life through readings and narrator panels. Through these voices we will explore what draws us to this place, what helps us persevere during times of struggle, and what cultivates our sense of belonging to the area known as “The Harbor.”
Voices from the Harbor is an event series produced with funding from Humanities Washington. This is the first in a series of three events.
The public is invited to join local historians and students from the Evergreen State College as they share selections from oral histories collected by and from Harbor residents. Participants will learn about the craft of composing oral histories as they listen to stories about the Harbor Region from the perspective of local residents.
Giving Voice to Experience is the first of three events planned for the Voices of the Harbor project β produced through a collaboration between the Evergreen State College and Window Seat Media; with support from Humanities Washington.
Historian Lorraine McConaghy will begin the program with an illustrated introduction to the warβs themes. Following that, guests may participate in a scripted βReadersβ Theater,” designed to portray the turmoil of the years 1914 – 1919. Β The script is drawn from first-person sources such as letters, diaries and news paper stories. It allows modern readers to speak aloud the words of a past generation, and gain an sense of how Washingtonians of that era experienced the great social, economic and political changes: industrialization, immigration, womenβs rights, radical labor, epidemic disease, and worldwide turmoil.

Throughout the Northwest, people have been reporting encounters with the Sasquatchβ a hairy, eight to ten-foot-tall hominid βfor hundreds of years. Yet no scientifically accepted evidence has been offered to establish this beingβs existence.
Author David George Gordon evaluates the data gathered about the legendary Northwest icon, discusses the rules of critical thinking and the workings of the scientific method, and explains how one can become an effective βcitizen scientistβ by gathering credible evidence that can be used to substantiate the Sasquatchβs status as either Man-Ape or Myth.
He is the author of “The Sasquatch Seekerβs Field Manual: Using Citizen Science to Uncover North Americaβs Most Elusive Creature“.Β Read more about the authorΒ here.

On November 3, 1970 by special election and signed off by former Washington Secretary of State Ludlow Kramer, the community of Ocean Shores became a certified city. As such, 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Ocean Shoresβ cityhood.
Anniversary events will begin with a kick-off celebration recognizing the Welcome to Ocean Shores sign, erected 20 years ago at the city gates, as a significant historical feature.
Hosting this event, the Museum of the North Beach and Ocean Shores Coastal Interpretive Center with missions to preserve and share area history have joined forces to erect an informational plaque explaining that artist Judy McVay created the sign. The Mayor and City Council are expected to attend.
Judy McVay along with her brothers pioneered chainsaw carving as an artform, founded the chainsaw carving expo at the Puyallup Fair in the 1980βs, were instrumental in creating local carving events, and Judy was the first Washington woman to win a chainsaw carving competition. In addition to creating the Welcome to Ocean Shores sign, her work can be seen all along the Washington Coast, the Pacific Coast Scenic Byway (Hwy 101) and many other locations.
In Ocean Shores, Judyβs work can be viewed at Moby Dickβs on Point Brown Ave. where her βSand Castleβ sign hangs as well as inside the Convention Center vestibule where collaborative pieces created by Judy and her son, Boaz Backus can be found. Boaz along with brother, Steve founded the βsawdustβ portion of Ocean Shoresβ famed Sand and Sawdust Festival.
βThe Welcome to Ocean Shores sign is a highly photographed, significant part of the experience when entering the city and should be recognized as such,β said Coastal Interpretive Center Board President, Nancy Eldridge. βThe Museum of the North Beach and our friends at the Coastal Interpretive Center are proud to recognize this historical artifact,β added Museum of the North Beach Executive Director, Kelly Calhoun.
Sign dedication will commence at noon, Saturday January 18, 2020 at the city gates. A historical marker will be placed near the sign and this event will officially kick-off the year long Ocean Shores 50th anniversary celebration. Everyone is encouraged and invited to attend!
